Like the ‘slow’ movements out there which encourage us to slow down, smell the roses, and appreciate the things around us, my approach to decorating is pretty much the same: methodical, evolving and – well – just plain slow 😉 While I can appreciate those rare times when I’ve needed to make a few fast and big purchases (like the time we first moved into our home and had no appliances – eek! ), most of the time, I prefer to take my time in picking just the right pieces; ones that I will truly love over the long run. Part of this has to do with a desire to watch my spending, which can really slow things down. But I’ve also noticed that the items I most cherish are those that have come out of a time of waiting – waiting for just the right piece at just the right time.
This new boho-inspired stool for the foyer is one of those purchases. I had been thinking about adding an extra seat on the far right corner of the foyer almost as soon as we moved in.
The area serves as a natural spot nearest the door where anyone can slip on a pair of shoes before leaving the house. While the two Ikea chairs across from the buffet serve this purpose, I wanted something just a little closer to the door and an extra spot for when we have multiple guests.
So when I spotted the stool at Home Sense (the Canadian equivalent of Home Goods, for my American friends), I instantly knew it was what I had been waiting for.
It has all the qualities I was looking for: It is unobtrusive, fitting into the corner well without taking up too much space.
It has beautifully-carved legs and a lovely grain in the wood.
The colour is a lovely brown that matches the buffet quite well.
And that seat! It has a lovely bohemian/Navajo pattern that feels warm and comfortable. I love the warm tones mixed with the cool grey colour which strikes a nice balance. Given my recent foray into weaving (check out my Introduction to Weaving here) I am especially in love with the woven pattern in the seat…
…and the studs around the base add a lovely touch.
Although a small purchase, relatively speaking, I was very excited to find the stool. I think it adds a bit more personality and pattern into this space. A small change, but one that furthers my love of decorating 🙂
Although the corner is still in need of more wall items, perhaps some wall hooks and more art, this is a step in the right direction. If decorating is all in the details, then this is one detail I am loving right now 🙂
