8 Wall Decor Ideas

Get inspired by these 8 wall decor ideas chalk full of crafty and stylish alternatives to traditional wall art. There's no better way to personalize a home!

I’ve always been a fan of framed art and photos to decorate blank walls. There are so many styles to choose from and plenty of ways to display them. However, I also crave diversity in decor, including my wall art. With so much real estate being taken up by a home’s wall space, I think we ought to take some creative risks in order to provide interest, cohesion, and personality in the home. And with each risk we take, I believe we get bolder and braver and all the more creative – at least that’s been my experience. As I decorate my way around our own home’s empty walls (and there are still a few that need some real love), I find myself experimenting more with the type of decor I put on my walls. In today’s post, I’m sharing 8 wall decor ideas straight from my home! And with any hope, these will spark some ideas of your own that can take your walls from ho-hum to creative and full of personality (just like you 😉 ).

1.  DIY YARN WALL HANGING

Add a DIY yarn wall hanging for a strong, soft statement like this one in this reading nook. Just choose your coordinating colours and you’ve got a lovely piece to anchor your furniture and other decor items.

2.  WALL CUBBIES

Wall Cubbies // 8 Wall Decor Ideas.Wall cubbies are often considered utilitarian, more useful for storage than display. But these wall cubbies create an artistic wall statement with DIY interchangeable back panels that can be changed out with the seasons and changing colours in the home. They are a fun way to accent a narrow or long wall (like mine) and the display pieces can be swapped out for plants, teacups, plates or anything that brings out some personality in your space. See DIY Cubby Wall Display to find out how.

3.  FRAMED GEOMETRIC EMBROIDERY

Framed embroidery // 8 Wall Decor Ideas.

This DIY framed geometric embroidery puts a modern face on this traditional art of our grandmother’s day. Sharp edges, a colour block pattern, and a crisp, white frame are all it takes to modernize and add an unexpected ‘edge’ to your walls. Display on its own or as part of a gallery wall.

4.  WALL WEAVINGS

Create these super cute mini weavings using two easy to make weaving techniques. A lovely alternative to wall art and sweet addition to any space.

Wall weavings have come back in a really big way – and I am glad for it! They are a great way to add texture and visual interest in a room. Whether bright and colourful or low key and muted, don’t underestimate a weaving’s impact in a space like these 3 mini wall weavings which add loads of texture and cheerful pops of colour. Add them to a gallery wall or on their own, in a living room, dining room or baby”s room, and you’ve got yourself a unique and crafty addition to your walls.

5.  FRAMED MINI WEAVING

Create your own DIY mini framed weaving in an hour using a loom, yarn scraps and basic frame. A unique idea to add to a gallery wall or hang on its own to add a warm touch to any room.

Normally hung in their natural form, wall weavings can make a lovely style statement on any wall. For some of us, however, this may be a little too out-of-the-box (so to speak 😉 ). This DIY framed mini wall weaving is an unexpected way to incorporate the trend seamlessly with all of your other framed finds, but with much more texture and visual appeal.

6.  ART MIRRORS

Art Mirrors // 8 Wall Decor ideasWe don’t often think of mirrors as ‘art’ but in some cases, that’s just what they are! Mirrors with artful frames, like this pair with a Greco-Roman motif, create both utility and beauty.

7.  CREATIVE LADDER DISPLAY

Ladder Display // 8 Wall Decor ideas

Blanket ladders are not just for storage anymore! Use them in creative ways to display artful throws, like this graphic blanket, or to hang garlands, wreaths, photos, a string of lights, and anything you can think of.

If it can be hung, it can be displayed on a ladder. Ladders are a great way to fill a blank, boring wall with some vertical interest. Check out my pinterest board “ladder love” for more creative ideas on how to use a ladder for artistic display.

8.  OMBRE YARN GARLAND

Ombre Yarn Garland // 8 Wall Decor Ideas

Christmas is often a time we pull out greenery to create lovely garlands around the home. But garlands can be used all year ’round. This Ombre Yarn Garland (With a Macrame Twist) is an eye-catching DIY that you can personalize by size, colour and length. If you are looking for an easy way to cover a large wall, this may be just the thing to try!

Well, I hope these 8 wall decor ideas offer you bits of decor and craft inspiration for your walls. We are only as limited as we allow our imaginations to be 🙂

Happy (wall) decorating 🙂

Love the wall cubbies. I did something similar when I redid my bedroom. I found a multi cubbie box that I painted black and filled with tiny itmes like colored glass bottles, sea shells, and mini pictures of my daughter.

Great round-up. Love the Greco mirrors and ladder display. Maybe that’d force folks to hang up throw blankets! Visiting from Sweet Inspiration party.

Oh, I love the ombre yarn garland … something, I’m fairly certain, the other half would hate. Nice curation!

LOL! Yes, the other half finds the garland a curiosity, for sure, and definitely not his first choice. But (God love him), he puts up with it 🙂

Thanks Beverly. The cubby display was fun to design. It was a very long wall that needed some love and those seemed to do the trick. Take care!

Thank you! The blanket ladder is not often something we think of for taking up vertical decor on walls, but you can really make the most of them in the home 🙂
