I’ve been ‘sitting on’ (pardon the pun) plans for designing our small sitting room in the basement for quite some time. It wasn’t until I came across an affordable sofa in a style I liked that I finally began dreaming up some design plans. So today I’m giving you a sneak peek into my space currently, my design plans for it, and a round-up of some of my Amazon mid century decor faves 🙂
It’s a blog post packed with a lot of decor and design punch! So let’s just dive right in!

OUR BASEMENT SITTING ROOM IN PROGRESS
Here is our basement sitting room as it looked earlier this year (yes, that is snow piled up against the window!)
The sitting room is located at one end of a long space that is shared by my Craft Studio. Some of you may remember the grand unveiling last year 😉
(You can take the Facebook Live Craft Studio tour here; And if you’re looking for a little crafting inspiration at home, feel free to scroll through all my Facebook Live craft tutorials here)
Because the sitting room is a bit of an odd space – neither a living room nor a proper family room – hubby and I decided that, at the very least, it should accommodate an overnight guest should the Guest Bedroom become occupied.
(If you missed it, check out our Guest Bedroom Refresh which I completed earlier this year)
Once I found an affordable and stylish sleeper sofa (still on sale on Wayfair as of this publication date), hubby and I assembled it (in about an hour!) and then I was off to the design races!
Here is that same space with the sofa assembled and the area de-cluttered!
With the exception of the sofa, each piece of furniture in this space was gifted to me by family and friends. Yay!
So after hanging onto these pieces (some for several years), I’m so excited to finally see this space come together!
MY SITTING ROOM DESIGN PLANS
Design Question #1
Before embarking on any design process, I always ask one key question.
What is the PURPOSE of this space?
- My answer? MULTI-PURPOSE!!
Although one of it’s functions is to be a spare sleeping space, I knew that this could not be it’s only function. I wanted this sitting room to be a space where hubby and I could see ourselves just hanging out in.
And while we already have a living room, this meant that this little corner of the basement needed to be something a wee bit different.
So here are the THREE FUNCTIONS I’ve determined for this space. It will be a:
- Reading Room (with an accessible collection of books nearby)
- TV Watching Room (as it is next to my Craft Studio, I reasoned that it would be a great space to migrate to between projects)
- Spare Guest Room (when the guest bedroom upstairs is already occupied)
A TALL order for such a small space! But achievable, I think.
Design Question #2
How will the layout accommodate all 3 functions of this multi-purpose space?
Here are a few ideas that I’m playing around with, including some that cover form, not just function. (Hey, I gotta decorate the space too 😉 )
AFFORDABLE AMAZON MID-CENTURY DECOR FINDS
With so many of the big ticket items already in the space, I’ll be able to focus my purchases on accessories.
While I hope to get more thrifted pieces (like the bamboo magazine rack next to the sofa), I’ve also got my eye on mid-century decor I’ve found on Amazon to style this space.
