It’s no secret that I love abstract art. Whether it’s the unexpected feeling that it evokes or the visual interest of the brush strokes themselves, abstract art is a must in my home decor.
If you’re a fan of abstract art – or just love the therapeutic value of creating it – then you’ll love today’s tutorial on how to whip up these two DIY brushstroke statement art pieces at home.

DIY BRUSHSTROKE STATEMENT ART – THE STEPS
ART PIECE #1
Step 1: Load Paint Onto Palette
Taking a tube of paint, squeeze a generous amount on your paint palette.
Step 2: Load Paint Onto Brush
Taking your brush, load the paint onto your brush. Be careful not to mix the colours together.
Step 3: Add Your First Brushstroke
Pressing down gently on your craft paper (or canvas), drag the brush along on a slight angle in one continuous motion until the paint runs dry.
Step 4: Adding More Brushstrokes
Load your brush and, starting at the point where your first brushstroke ends, add another one.
Continue adding brushstrokes in this way until you are happy with your design.
In total, I used 5 brushstrokes for this piece:
ART PIECE #2
Like the first, this DIY statement art involves a series of brushstrokes. But unlike the first, this piece has three sets of strokes beside one another – one on the left, one in the middle, and one on the right.
Left side first:
Using colours of your choice, load your paint brush as before.
Begin adding strokes to the left portion of the piece.
Then add strokes to the middle portion.
Then, repeat on the right side to complete the piece.
Let both pieces dry thoroughly.
Step 5: Frame & Display
Now you’re ready to display your DIY Brushstroke Statement Art!
(For my frames, I chose these affordable, solid oak ones from Opposite Wall in 8 X 10 inch and 5 X 7 inch, available on Amazon. I added a light coat of grey acrylic paint on the smaller frame for added interest.)
I hope you enjoyed today’s easy-breezy DIY brushstroke statement art tutorial. I know I enjoyed making these little pieces. I love the modern vibe they add to this floating shelves display!
