One of the few trends that Iโve been tracking (and loving) these days is the use of pampas grass in decor and crafts. I love the natural softness and beauty that pampas grass adds to a home. If youโre also loving this trend, then stick around as I share how to make an easy, elegant DIY mixed pampas grass wreath for your home.

MATERIALS NEEDED
- Ring wreath form (I used a 16″ like these ones)
- Variety of pampas and other grasses (including these, these, these, these or these)
- Craft wire (20-24 gauge works) like this one or these ones.
- Scissors
STEPS TO MAKING A DIY MIXED PAMPAS GRASS WREATH
Step 1: Attach Wire To Ring
Attach the end of your wire anywhere on your ring wreath form.
You wonโt be cutting this wire until you have completed the entire project.
Step 2: Attaching Your Bundles
Create a bundle with a mix of grasses (and maybe a bit of wheat, too ๐ ).
I decided to set one bundle aside as a reference (below, right side), not to duplicate, but as a general reference for each subsequent bundle I would be creating and attaching to the ring.
Now, attach your first bundle by adding it directly over the portion of wire already wrapped around the ring.
Wrap your wire around the stems and ring, joining them together.
Cut the excess stems.
Create a second bundle and place on top of the exposed wire of the first bundle.
Wrap your second bundle to the wreath form, just as you did the first.
Continue in this way, adding one bundle at a time, remembering to cut the excess stems.
TIPS ALONG THE WAY…
Tip 1: Vary Bundle Designs
If you want your wreath to feel varied, yet still cohesive in appearance, your bundles do not have to match too precisely. Itโs nice to create unexpected bundles that add an element of surprise.
Tip 2: Advance Wiring
In order to prevent having long loose wires between bundles, continue wrapping the wire around the ring until you get to the spot where you will be wrapping the next bundle.
Tip 3: Check Your Bundle Attachments (+ Hairspray Tip!)
Pampas grasses can be unpredictable and sometimes even ‘droopy,’ depending on the types you’ve chosen to work with. Every so often, check to make sure you are happy with the level of โdroopโ in your grasses.
In some cases, you can add a bit of hair spray to parts of the wreath to ensure your pampas grasses don’t get too wild or out of control ๐
If you end up purchasing the grasses included in the materials I’ve listed, droopiness is not a big issue (but have that hair spray at the ready!)
Step 3: Attaching Final Bundle
Once you reach the end, you may find it a bit tricky to attach that final bundle.
The following steps will make it easy:
1. Do some ‘advance wiring’ towards the first bundle attachment. Make sure to lift the first bundle up a bit to wrap that wire as far as you need to.
2. Grabbing your last bundle, gently slide the stems underneath the first bundle.
3. Wrap the stems of that final bundle with your wire, making sure to gently lift the first bundle out of the way.
4. Release the first bundle, allowing it’s feathery grasses to cover the stems of the last bundle you’ve just wrapped for a ‘seamless’ attachment. (Don’t forget to cut the wire and wrap the end around the last bundle).
Step 4: Attach A Ribbon With Vintage Flair (Optional)
Attach a ribbon to match the feel of your wreath.
In my case, I decided to add a wrinkling effect by scrunching the ribbon to add a bit of vintage flair.
Step 5: Hang & Enjoy!
I love how this DIY mixed pampas grass wreath turned out! Itโs the perfect, natural addition to our master ensuite.
Hope you give this DIY a try!
Happy crafting ๐

How many ‘bundles’ did you use for the 16″ ring, and how many stems per bundle?

April 14, 2021 at 10:50 amHi Joy! I wasn’t sure, so I had to take a second look ๐ It looks like I used 12 bundles with approx 6-8 stems per bundle to create this particular look on my 16″ wreath. Have fun creating yours!
