SUPPLIES NEEDED
● Styrofoam Balls (you can find a wide variety of sizes online; mine were 3.8 inches in diameter and can be found on Amazon and at Michaels)
● Reindeer Moss (While you can use any moss you like, I chose 2 different colours of reindeer moss. This type of moss comes in ‘clumps’ of spongy pieces that are easy to work with. You can find a wide variety of colours at Michaels and on Amazon)
● Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks (For the curious: I used this cordless glue gun, but this less expensive model is just as good. Great glue gun for serious crafters. But even the cheapest $5 variety will easily work for this project).
TUTORIAL: DIY MOSS-COVERED BOWL FILLERS
A note about reindeer moss: As mentioned, one of the reasons I used reindeer moss was that it was easy to work with. It comes in sponge-like clumps that are pliable and don’t shed as much as other moss types (like Spanish moss, which is otherwise great as an all-purpose filler for a planter for example). For this reason, reindeer moss was my preferred choice and a breeze to work with for this craft project.
Okay, onto the first step: Taking your glue gun, add a small dollop of glue directly onto one of your styrofoam balls.
Adhere your first piece of moss by pressing it against the hot glue. Hold for a few seconds, or until the hot glue dries.
Lift up the edge of the moss and add more glue to the styrofoam.
Press the edge of the moss onto the glue and hold until the glue dries.
NOTE: Since this first piece of moss was small, I used 3 dollops of glue (1 in the center and 2 along the opposite sides of the moss). For larger pieces, I used more glue. Keep this in mind as you work your way around the styrofoam ball.
Repeat the above steps to adhere the next piece(s) of moss to your styrofoam ball.
If there is a gap between two pieces, you can either add more moss or simply stretch the edge of the piece over to fill the gap.
Continue adding glue and more clumps of moss around the styrofoam ball.
Design Tip: Since I am using 2 colours of Reindeer Moss, I decided to use one colour primarily on one side (citrus-green moss) and the second colour mainly on the other (a blue-green moss), but with a bit of colour mixing throughout. I wanted to have some flexibility in my decorating, depending on the season or colour scheme I am leaning into.
Even so, the final result had the effect of a blended ‘patchwork’ effect that created a lot of interest.
How I Styled these Moss Bowl Fillers:
Since I knew which bowl I’d be filling, I only needed three moss-covered styrofoam balls for this project. It was the perfect number to fill this decorative bowl in our living room.
These diy moss-covered bowl fillers offer a simple solution when adding a bit of the outdoors in your spring and summer displays. They are so versatile as decor, can be added or removed easily, and offer so many simple styling options for anyone who loves to play around with their accessories.
Happy decorating, friends 🙂
