I’ve always been all about the details when it comes to styling my home. I truly believe it’s what makes or breaks the look and feel of a room. Mind you, I don’t always succeed in executing all that I imagine! But, it’s always fun trying 🙂 As a crafter, some of my favourite ‘detailing’ involves styling a space with handmade items which add that extra bit of charm. One recent ‘charmer’ was a garland made with natural, unfinished wood beads. I was so thrilled with how it turned out – and how easy it was to make – that I wanted to share the step-by-step here. So in today’s post, I’m showing you how to make a wood bead tassel garland as well as some tips & inspiration on how to decorate with it around your home.

MATERIALS TO MAKE A WOOD BEAD TASSEL GARLAND
- I used 57 unfinished 3/4 inch wood beads (with holes through the center). The number of beads you use is entirely up to you and will depend on your personal preferences.
- I also added 2 slightly larger (1 inch) unfinished wood beads (also with holes through the center) for added embellishment
- white cotton yarn
- blunt, large-eye needle
- scissors
- Optional: washi tape, white acrylic paint, small paint brush
STEPS
Step 1 (Optional): Paint the 2 Large Wood Beads
This step is entirely optional. But if you’d like to add a bit of paint to the project, follow along:
First, tape one half of each of the 2 largest beads.
Then, paint the exposed half with white acrylic paint.
Let dry (about 10 minutes) and paint another layer. I painted 3 layers to create a nice solid, white appearance.
Once (almost) fully dried, remove the tape.
Step 2: Make Your Tassels
I’ve written about how to make tassels in a previous post (DIY Mini Tassel Fringe) which outlines this process step-by-step. But, if video is more your speed, then click on the video below:
Step 3: Stringing the Wood Beads
Once you’ve created your tassels, you are now ready to string your wood beads.
Begin by threading your needle with yarn. (Important: Don’t cut any yarn off the yarn bundle just yet),
Next, guide the needle under the top end of the head of one of your DIY tassels.
Once the needle has been guided all the way through, remove it from the yarn so that you can create a double knot at the top.
Next, measure the length of yarn you need according to the number of beads you have to create your garland. I measured about 55-60 inches of yarn length to accommodate all my beads (and then some).
**Go ahead and snip the yarn off the yarn bundle. You should now have one long length of yarn with one of your tassels attached at one end.
Re-thread your needle at the opposite end and begin stringing your beads.
As you string your beads, push each one towards the bottom, where the tassel is.
Once you string the last wood bead, get ready to attach the second tassel.
Begin by slipping the needle through the top of the tassel head.
Pull the yarn as far as it can go, pulling the tassel tightly against the last bead.
Tie a knot between the bead and tassel.
To make sure the garland is a bit more secure, push the tip of the needle back into the garland, 2-3 beads in, and tie another knot.
Snip off the yarn.
And that’s how you make a natural, wood bead tassel garland.

Styling Tips
My wood bead tassel garland is currently displayed on my coffee table, but it can easily be moved around and styled elsewhere. A garland like this one can be curled around:
- a candle or a planter
- a jug vase
- a framed print
- a book
- candlesticks
- a door knob
- a vignette of any kind
There are so many possibilities with this wood bead tassel garland. Experiment and have fun.
Happy decorating 🙂
