Today’s DIY is, admittedly, an experiment and one off the beaten path. I’d been exploring embroidery hoop crafts for several months and started seeing more pieces that incorporated unusual fabrics, including tulle (a delicate, mesh material). I really loved the idea of including it in my crafted decor pieces. So recently I decided to create my own embroidery hoop art using tulle. This is the first one (of many, I hope) and I am pretty excited about all the possibilities of using tulle in more of my craft projects. But before I get ahead of myself (!) let me share how I made this particular embroidery hoop art using tulle and how you can, too.
SUPPLIES NEEDED To Make This Embroidery Hoop Art Using Tulle

- embroidery hoop
- faux flowers
- tulle fabric
- low temperature hot glue gun & glue sticks
- scissors
- wire cutters
STEPS
Step 1: Cut Flowers
Cut the flowers you’d like to use for your piece. I used these simple, pink, synthetic flowers.
Step 2: Separate Hoops
If you’ve never used embroidery hoops, all you need to know is that there are two hoops – an inner and an outer hoop. To separate them, simply unscrew the top.
Once you do, the outer hoop will loosen up, allowing the hoops to separate.
Step 3: Cut First Layer of Tulle
For this project, there are two layers of tulle fabric – on the front and on the back. Begin by cutting the first layer of tulle. Make sure it is larger than the hoop.
Step 4: Glue Tulle To the Inner Hoop
Glue the tulle to the outside edge of the inner hoop. Make sure you are using a low-temp hot glue gun (as opposed to a high-temp glue gun) which is designed specifically for fabrics and delicate materials.
Start with one dot of glue.
Then fold the tulle against the side of the hoop.
Next, glue the outer edge on the opposite end.
Continue adding as many glue dots along the sides as you feel you need to secure the tulle to the hoop.
Note: Fabric glue or even hem fabric tape would be a great option, but for this experiment of mine, the hot glue seemed to work just fine.
Step 5: Hot Glue the Flowers
Glue the flowers onto the tulle. All you need are a few dots per flower. Because of the fragility of the tulle, be very strategic about where you glue the flowers. I glued the stems and then a few more points along the top.
This is what the flowers look like from the back side. Note the shiny, semi-transparent bits of glue along the stems at the bottom.
Don’t forget to cut off the excess tulle.
Step 6: Cut Second Layer of Tulle & Glue to the Hoop
Cut another layer of tulle. This second piece will be placed over top of the flowers on the side that is still exposed.
As with the first layer, glue the second layer of tulle along the sides of the hoop.
Cut off the excess tulle.
Step 7: Re-attach the Outer Hoop
Place the outer hoop around the inner hoop and tighten the screw at the top.
Here is a side view of the finished product.
This was so much fun to design and create. I just love how the flowers appear suspended. It’s my new favourite piece in our home!
This craft project was straightforward, but did require a bit of patience. Tulle fabric requires a light tough, but all in all, I found working with this mesh fabric fun and easy.
Hope you give it a try!
Happy crafting 🙂

March 21, 2018 at 7:36 pmI totally get you, Mary. The tulle definitely creates a soft, almost ‘dreamy’ look. Truthfully, it turned out better than I imagined when I was designing it. Really fun to make, too.
