With spring just around the corner, I thought I’d share a few simple ideas for how to make cut tulips last longer. Tulips are one of the easiest ways to bring a little of the season indoors…BUT they’re also notorious for drooping not long after you bring them home. That said, with a few small prep tips, you can easily help them stay fresh and upright just a little longer.

How To Make Cut Tulips Last Longer (4 Easy Care Tips)
It’s not quite spring here in Canada yet and with all the snow outside – STILL – I’ve been craving a little colour and life indoors. So when I was at the grocery store the other day and spotted several bundles of beautiful tulips, I thought “yep… I need these right now.”

I scooped up two bundles, brought them home, prepped them (which took about 5 minutes), and popped them into a simple glass vase on my dining table so I can see them every day.
But if you’ve ever bought cut tulips before, you probably know they have a notoriously short life span. They look amazing for a few days… and then suddenly they’re leaning sideways like they’ve given up.
Thankfully, there are a few very simple tricks that can help keep them looking fresh a little longer that I want to share with you, in case you have the same urge for tulips!
Here are four easy tips that really help.
STEP 1 – Cut (and-recut) Stems on An Angle

Did you know that cut tulips continue to GROW, sometimes an inch per day in the vase! I know, right – who knew? Because of this, to ensure proper hydration, it’s recommended that you cut the bottom of each stem on an angle so water can flow up the stem easily.
Because they continue to grow – so rapidly – re-cut the stems every 1-2 days to keep them fresh, prevent drooping, and maintain proper hydration.
STEP 2 – Remove the Lowest Leaf

Any leaves under water = rot. So remove the lowest leaf on each stem to prevent that from happening. It keeps the water cleaner, slows bacterial growth, and makes it easier for the water to flow up the stem.
This simple step makes a big difference in keeping those tulips perky.
STEP 3 – Pierce the Stem with a Clean Pin

Here’s a florist trick that I read about online that really works: take a clean pin and gently pierce the tulip stem about 1 inch below the flower head.
Why? Hollow stems sometimes trap air bubbles that block water from reaching the flower. Piercing the stem lets the air escape, so your tulips stay upright and happy longer. Don’t skip this step – it’s one of the most important on this list.
STEP 4 – Water Management
So here’s another florist tip that was so helpful to discover: tulips flourish best in both shallow AND cold water.

Here’s why: too much water can make the stems grow faster – as if they weren’t growing fast enough! – which leads to drooping. And cooler water helps slow the growth process, keeping tulips upright longer.
Water management summary tips:
- Keep your tulips in about 2-3 inches of water.
- Add a couple of ice cubes in the water to keep it cooler, longer.
- Change water daily. Don’t forget to add a couple of ice cubes each time.
- Keep tulips out of direct sunlight, for best results
Display & Enjoy!

Now you can sit back, sip your tea (or coffee…or wine – no judgment), and enjoy those happy, perky tulips on your table. A little bit of prep goes a long way, and suddenly those grocery store bouquets don’t feel so short-lived.
Even just seeing them upright and happy for a few extra days feels so lovely at this time of year🌷
