How To Make A Floral Crowned Deer Head

This DIY floral crowned deer head takes just 10 minutes to create. Apply the same method to antlers, gnarly driftwood, decorative branches and any other natural woodland decor. This is going to sound a bit peculiar, but…I’ve always wanted to try my hand at creating a floral crowned deer head. Truly! I’ve seen plenty for sale in my Pinterest feed, but I decided to make my own (budget-friendly) version instead. You may have caught a glimpse of it already in my recent mini home tour. So today, I’m popping in to share how I made it. And, best of all, it takes just 10 minutes to make.

Embracing Contrasts

But first, a word or two about using contrasts in the home. I love, love, LOVE mixing unexpected elements together.  I know that mixing and matching can feel a bit daunting at times.  When we first moved into our bungalow, I was fearful of making ANY design mistakes. We have an open-concept space that I did not want to mess up with too many competing elements.

It wasn’t until I decided to throw caution to the wind, take some style risks – and make a few mistakes along the way – that I began crafting and DIY-ing some of my most-treasured decor pieces. And finding unique home accessories became a lot more fun. I had finally found my personal style, and embraced it.

More Decor Drama, Please!

So, this season, I decided to add a bit more drama into my space. But it would need to be something that would also complement my overall style which is a bit rustic, a bit modern, and generally fresh and bright.

Enter:  my floral crowned deer head DIY. The idea came to me one day when I was coming home from my local craft store. With a few bags of silk flowers in hand, I caught a glimpse of the deer skull that my husband had placed above his work bench. It was one of his favourite finds after coming back from one of his excursions to the woods. I can safely say that when I first saw it, I thought, yikes! It seemed a bit creepy to me – interesting, but definitely creepy…

But, I must admit, when I saw it that day coming home from the craft store, I instantly recalled all of those Pinterest images of floral crowns on deer heads and just knew I had to use it in my next craft project.

(BTW:  My husband liked the project when he saw it – even wanted to get a picture of it. Said he wanted proof that I finally relented and brought the deer head into the house 😉 )

So, if you too are searching for something a little off the beaten path, why not try this floral crowned deer head DIY? It took me all but 10 minutes to create. If you don’t have a deer or cow skull handy – and who does, really? – you can apply the same method to antlers or gnarly branches and driftwood, or buy faux deer heads here.

MATERIALS

You will need the following materials for this DIY:

STEPS

Step 1:  Clip Off Stems

First start by clipping off the stems of your flowers. Do the same for your greenery.

Step 2: Create Floral Crown Arrangement

Arrange your flowers on the deer head before attaching them.

Step 3: Wrap Floral Bundles Using Floral Wire

Begin removing the flowers from the deer head, one small bundle at a time. I started in the middle.

Clip off some floral wire and wrap around the bundle.

Do the same with the remaining flowers.

Step 4:  Attach Floral Bundles To Dear Head

Now you can attach each bundle to the deer head using more floral wire. Simply wrap the wire around the horns and any area that will secure that floral crown to the head. Clip off any excess stems. Below is a view from the back.

Step 5:  Time To Hang & Display

Tip:  To make things easy, I used the opening along the base of the head to hang it onto a removable 3M Command Hook. I used the clear version (my go-to fave) which is not visible and makes it appear as if the head is mounted directly onto the wall. And when I want to change things up, I can simply remove the head and hook without damaging the wall. Seriously, how cool is that?

I love that this floral crowned deer head is so easy to make! It was a spontaneous idea to DIY and, best of all, I had it hanging in a matter of 10 minutes. I’m seriously in love with it!

I hope this craft has got you thinking of ways you, too, can add a bit of drama to your home. It may not be a deer head with flowers on it, but it’ll be wonderful whatever you decide to do 🙂

Happy crafting 🙂

So beautiful!! I’m so glad you shared this one Jelica. I loved it on your mini home tour and I know some people may say it’s a bit wacky to include a skull in your decor, but that’s what it’s all about and you’ve honored something special in a very unique way. Love it

It is a little creepy but also pretty cool–very Georgia O’Keeffe. I think my daughter, who has a very colorful and funky apartment, would really love this. Thanks for the idea.

This is very cool! I love how you used the faux flowers allowing you to keep the pretty flare on such a masculine piece for a long period of time. Very pretty!

The pairing is definitely part of what makes this work. I do love using faux flowers. They make them so life-like these days that it’s hard not to buy up a bunch and do a lot of fun, long-lasting crafts with them. I have a small stash in my basement waiting to be used for my next craft project 🙂

Jelica- is the skull real or just a very good look a like (is it made of resin if not real?)

Hi Emily, Believe it or not, this is a real skull. It was intact in the woods. My husband found it and brought it home one day and I decided to ‘dress it up’ for the spring 🙂 It’s now back in the man cave (ie the garage).

Yes, that would definitely be another way to adhere the flowers onto the head piece.
