Recently, I started making a large macrame wall hanging for our Great Room (which I’ll share at another time!). Although it was a project that required all my patience – taking several hours over several weeks to complete – it was not complicated. All I used was one knot – the vertical double half-hitch knot – to create the entire piece!
I’ve definitely fallen in love with this knot – if one could fall in love with such things! – as it reminds me so much of the humble tabby (or plain) weave stitch in weaving.
It’s simple. It’s elegant. And it was so easy to apply it to making these modern, minimal DIY macrame coasters.
I loved how these turned out.
Once you master the double half-hitch knot, there are so many possible projects you can create, from coasters to placemats to bookmarks to ornaments to table runners and wall hangings, too!
So, if you’re ready to give this knot a try – or you just need some creative inspiration for your own projects! – check out my list of supplies then follow along with the video tutorial found directly below my supplies list.
WHERE TO BUY YOUR SUPPLIES
I used the following supplies for this project:
- 3mm natural/unbleached macrame cord
- 3mm black macrame cord
- 3mm, single twist, macrame cord (lentil green) purchased from this Etsy seller. You can find similar, single twist cords, here and here.
- NOTE: You can also try any 3mm macrame cords (triple twist are more readily available in a wide variety of colours) on Amazon here and Etsy here.
- Dowel (anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch is suitable)
- “S” hooks can be purchased on Amazon and on Etsy, too – sizes vary
- Wire comb (pet combs)
- Darning needle or bent tip tapestry needle.
