Today I’m popping in to share this raw and natural Boho Raffia Wreath DIY. It’s so easy to make and adds a lovely rustic touch at home.

RAFFIA WREATH DIY
Raffia is a new-to-me crafting medium, but one that I’d been wanting to incorporate into my decor for a while. I love that it’s flexible and strong and there seems to be no end of ways you could use it at home.
So I decided to purchase a package of raffia on Amazon so that I could experiment with it both as decor and art. Suffice it to say, you’ll be seeing raffia pop up on the blog from time to time in some of my craft experiments this year 🙂
So here’s the very simple raffia wreath how-to!
MATERIALS NEEDED: RAFFIA WREATH DIY
- Raffia bundles – lots to choose from on Amazon (I purchased this pack of bundles)
- Embroidery hoop (the inner ring) – or any ring (wood, plastic or metal)
- Burlap scrap or burlap ribbon
- Leather cord (or synthetic leather cord)
- Glue gun (low temp) and glue sticks
- Scissors
RAFFIA WREATH DIY – THE STEPS
STEP 1: WRAP EMBROIDERY HOOP
Using the inner portion of the embroidery hoop, add a dab of glue.
Attach a small bundle (3-4 strands) of raffia, leaving a small tail. Hold for a few seconds, allowing the hot glue to dry.
Begin wrapping around the raffia tail. This will secure the raffia to the ring.
Continue wrapping until you reach the end of your raffia bundle.
Once you’ve used up that bundle, grab a new one, add a dab of glue, and continue wrapping.
Once you reach the end, add a dab of glue and cut off the excess raffia. Make sure to leave a portion unwrapped along the bottom.
STEP 2: ATTACH RAFFIA FRINGE
Taking a bundle of 2-3 raffia strips, fold in half.
Place looped middle under the ring.
Fold loop down over top of the ring.
Pull the raffia through the loop.
Pull to tighten the knot.
Continue attaching the fringe raffia.
Snip off the ends to shape.
STEP 3: ATTACH BURLAP (OPTIONAL)
These next two steps are totally optional:
Begin by gluing one end of the burlap ribbon (or burlap scraps) and wrap around the top.
Make sure to add more glue at the other end.
STEP 4: WRAP LEATHER CORD (OPTIONAL)
Add a dab of glue and begin wrapping the leather cord along the middle portion of burlap.
Make sure to add a final dab of glue to the end.
STEP 5: HANG YOUR WREATH!
There are lots of ways to hang a beauty like this one: on a nail, on a door knob or on a wreath hanger.
You can leave it as is or do as I did here by attaching a loop at the top (the same way I attached the raffia fringe). Then tie the tails together using an overhand knot.
Now you’re wreath is ready to be displayed!
So what do you think? Is this something you might want to try at home?
I really am thrilled with how it turned out! It’s got loads of texture and it’s neutral colour makes it a perfect decor piece to add into any space 🙂
I can’t wait to try (and share) some of my other raffia experiments with you!
