DIY Reversible Punch Needle Mug Rug: A Beginner Video Tutorial
You can totally make this your own – that’s half the fun. Here’s the piece I’ll be creating in the video tutorial:

Now, let’s flip that over…

…and see the reverse side – can you spot the difference?:

Here’s a close up of one side – the smooth, stitch side:

And here’s that same piece on the opposite, textured “loop” side:

I was inspired to make this – and share the process here – by the idea that punch needle is naturally reversible. While I noticed that many coasters and mug rugs are often finished with felt fabric covering the back – even in online tutorials – I couldn’t help but feel it was a shame to hide that second layer of texture and detail. I wanted to create something that embraces both sides, so whichever way you place it, it’s just as decorative.
Both sides can be beautiful!
Whether you’re in the mood for the smooth side, love a bit of texture, or want to switch between both, this reversible mug rug (or trivet!) is a total game changer.

In this tutorial, you’ll see exactly how to:
- thread and use a punch needle
- beginner troubleshooting
- master the “brick” stitch to ensure there are no gaps in your fabric
- hide and finish the raw edges
I also walk you through my freehand design process for sketching organic shapes directly onto Monk’s Cloth – the foundation fabric where you’ll be making all those beautiful stitches.

Supplies Needed to Make Your Reversible Mug Rug:
To follow along with the video, you’ll need these key materials:
- A Punch Needle for chunky yarn: In this video, I am using an Oxford Punch Needle (Size: #10 Regular) – suitable for chunky/bulky yarn (weight 5, ideally).
- Morgan No-Slip Hoop – Keeps your fabric drum-tight.
- Monk’s Cloth – The ideal foundation fabric.
- Yarn – Ideally, natural blends like wool (even blended wool) and cotton which are great heat-resistant choices.
- Finishing Tools – Scissors, ruler, fabric marker, and anti-fray fabric glue.
The beauty of this project is that there is no “wrong” side. Whether you prefer the clean look of the stitches or the plush texture of the loops, it looks polished from every angle.
Whether it’s the smooth, stitch side…

…or the textured ‘loop’ side.

I hope you like using yours as much as I do mine 🙂
Happy punching!
