As summer comes to an end, cooler temperatures and warmer colours are becoming increasingly noticeable around here. It’s at this time of year that I like to think about how I can play around with subtle seasonal accents to signal the coming of fall in our home. If you’re also in a ‘fall frame of mind’ but need some fresh ideas, I’ve got some tips to help you transition your decor from summer to fall. They are my tried and true favourites and never fail to prepare our home for the crisper, more colourful days ahead.
13 TIPS TO TRANSITION YOUR DECOR FROM SUMMER TO FALL
1. Porch Refresh
Giving a nod to fall on your front porch does not need to incorporate all of the elements above.
Adding just one or two accents like a late summer planter, some mini pumpkins or gourds, or even just a cozy blanket or pillow may be all it takes to create a welcoming front entrance.
I’ve experimented with a lot of different colours and looks on our front porch over the years. Check out some of these in the following video tours & blog tutorials showcasing plenty of ideas to get you inspired:

2. A Simple Front Door Refresh
If you have little to no time to refresh your porch, then the simplest and easiest way to transition from summer to fall is to add just 2 items to your front door:
1) A fresh or faux wreath and 2) a layered welcome mat.
Whether you’re pressed for time or you’re a minimalist who loves just a dash of seasonal decor, this is a great solution. It’s been my go-to method for creating a warm welcome for family and friends that requires little effort.
3. Early Fall Floral Arrangement
You don’t need to have a full floral arrangement with autumnal colours to enjoy early fall. By incorporating just a few classically ‘fall’ colours like yellow, rust, red or burgundy into your existing summer arrangements (as I did above), you can make the transition to fall with ease.
Alternatively, add some warm and neutral foliage or pampas grass into a vase to add some softer shades of tan or brown to warm up your space.
4. Swapping out Vases
If it’s too early in the season to find flowers or foliage in fall colours, you may wish to swap out a vase or two with darker, richer hues or ones that incorporate autumnal colours like beige, caramel or brown.
A burlap vase, for example, adds both colour and texture.
While a thrifted copper vessel is a great way to add a bit of vintage charm.
You may even opt to DIY a leather-wrapped sleeve for a glass vase to change things up.
It’s the perfect way to add a unique fall touch to a summer floral arrangement that complements the transition between seasons.
5. Incorporate Antlers (Real or Fake)
Incorporating elements normally found outdoors into your home can be a quirky way to add an autumnal touch. If you already have a rustic home, antlers (real or fake) will fit into your decor all year round. Otherwise, they can add a sculptural element that gives a nod to autumn.
Whether you add it to a bookshelf, coffee table, end table, TV console, high or low dresser, you can inject more rusticity or temper a highly modern or formal space using antlers to create a relaxed look.
6. Hardcover Book Stacks (Vintage or Oversized)
Nothing spells cozy more than a stack of hardcover books. Whether they are displayed in a bookshelf, on a coffee table, end table, or sitting on a high stack on the floor, hardcover books, especially vintage ones, have a way of creating warmth in any space.
If you don’t own any vintage books, then pull out your favourite oversized, hardcover books and add them to one of your displays. Whether that’s a stack on your coffee table, end table, or console in your front entry, books have a way of creating a more casual, cozy vibe that’s perfect for transitioning to fall.
7. Add A Basket or Two
I NEVER tire of recommending baskets. They are useful storage and a great solution to reducing ‘visual clutter.’ But more than this, baskets made of natural, woven materials like seagrass, jute, or straw create warmth in any space.
For this reason, they are one of the easiest ways to transition into fall without trying very hard. With so many shapes and sizes, baskets have endless storage and style possibilities.
8. Add Some Texture
Adding a bit of warmth into your interiors can be as easy as layering in just a few additional textures and textiles. A basket, a thick or fuzzy throw blanket, a knitted or velvet pillow, a faux sheepskin rug on a sofa or chair all have the potential to create more warmth without feeling over the top.
9. Incorporate Your Favourite Outdoor Elements
Displaying a few natural elements that are specific to fall – like branches, pinecones, feathers, apples, pears or even a few gourds or small pumpkins – are just some of the subtle ways to transition into fall.
Whether you fill a vase with branches or feathers, fill a small bowl with gourds, mini pumpkins, or add a couple of pears or apples to a decorative display, there are several ways you can make way for a bit of fall indoors.

10. Pleasing Plaid
Plaid is a classic that I use year-round. But whether you lean ‘modern’ or lean ‘rustic’ in your personal home style, plaid is one of those patterns used in textiles that seems to work especially well during cooler seasons.
Layer it in through textiles like throw blankets, pillows, rugs or other accessories to add a cozy vibe. And whether you prefer a tartan, a check or a minimal windowpane plaid, you are bound to find the right plaid for your space.
11. Display A Neutral Wreath Indoors
An easy way to ease into fall without much decorating is through a simple wreath using a neutral colour palette.

Whether you use classic fall elements like pinecones, mini pumpkins, acorns, and wheat, or a tan and beige wreath using summery pampas grass, displaying a wreath with a warm palette can create a cozy vibe without much effort.
If time is not on your side, you can always whip up a single-stem wreath like this DIY Minimalist Dried Eucalyptus Ring Wreath that takes just a few minutes to make.
12. Candles
Whatever your preferred approach to decorating – maximalist or minimalist – mixing candles into your home decor never fails to create coziness indoors. Add tall candlesticks to a floral display, put smaller candles into some glass votives, or place chunky candles into cylinder vases. The style possibilities are endless.
13. Cut & Dry Summer Flowers for Fall
Cutting and drying your summer flowers can be a unique and easy way to transition from summer to fall.
If you wish to try this, choose flowers that will harmonize well with your fall colour palette. Deeper yellow, rust, red, or burgundy will nicely complement an autumnal colour palette. Use one large bunch or mix them into your late summer floral displays for an easy transition.
I hope today’s post gave you some fresh ideas on how to transition your decor from summer to fall. You don’t need to do much to incorporate subtle nods to fall that create warmth and coziness in your home.
