Craft Room Mood Board (+ Tips For Designing Your Space)

It seems ages ago that I first began to dream up a craft space of my own. A space where I could unleash my creativity without causing crafty chaos in other parts of my home 😉 I’m sure some of you can relate! Well, today I’m excited to update you on the progress of my craft room, to share my Craft Room Mood Board, and to give you some tips and inspiration to design your very own creative space!

A craft room mood board + tips to get you started designing your own!

Craft Room Update

Until last month, my ‘craft room’ was really just a dumping ground for my craft stash and some old furniture. This is what it looked like as I was clearing out the space.

And while the idea of renovating the room ourselves had a certain appeal, the amount of time and effort it would take to do so was a strong deterrent! So, instead, we decided that with the exception of painting the walls and ceiling ourselves we would hire contractors to renovate this part of the basement.

And, boy, were we glad we did! They finished most of the craft room in about a week (!) and we were very happy with the results. Here is the view along one side:

And here is the view from the opposite side:

Hubby and I painted the walls in a warm white colour and the base boards and ceiling in a classic white finish. I like how warm whites (and even ‘boring beiges’) can provide a lovely, neutral base for any furniture or accessories introduced into a space. But that’s just my preference. I love my whites!

Here is the paint and the flooring we chose:

We purchased each one of the following items from Home Depot.

(***The flooring is available at most Home Depot locations. The paint brand is Canadian, but I’ve included the colour code for easy matching with other brands***).

Craft Room Mood Board

Now that I have a ‘blank canvas’ to work with, I’m super excited to begin planning out the space. With the exception of one end of the room that will function as a small sitting area, the rest will be sectioned off into zones for all-purpose crafting, sewing, and, of course, weaving and accessible storage.

For today, I wanted to let you in on the overall feeling that I hope to create in this space using a Craft Room Mood Board as my starting point.

For those of you who have been following the blog since the beginning, you probably remember my Craft Corner Dreams post where I shared craft rooms that inspired me. These were bright little spaces with a whole lot of character. While the styles were different – ranging from vintage to modern – the one thing I noticed that they each had in common was a soft white palette and wood tones with some pops of colour.

I think my tastes have not changed all that much since then, though I now tend to gravitate toward a more subdued palette, heavy on the white and wood and light on the pops of colour.

Keeping in mind my love for an eclectic style, I put together this mood board to help refine the overall aesthetic of my craft space. Combining a bright, white palette and soft wood tones (my pops of colour will come later, when I accessorize the space), I found some great pieces to help fine-tune my design.

The following contains links to products I have already purchased or which I’m inspired to find something similar:

Linnmon/Krille Ikea Table

I had been looking for an all-purpose craft table on wheels and decided to go for this beauty! While it is not your typical craft table, it’s size and proportions will fit nicely into my narrow craft area. The two-toned design is also right up my alley and will integrate well with the white and wood tones in the room.

Kallax Ikea Workstation

I simply love the simple practicality of this desk combination that includes storage. And that two-toned desk! Love it.

Kallax Ikea Shelf Unit

This is probably one of my favourite storage systems at Ikea. It’s sleek, it’s practical, and it can fit into any space. I’ve also got a few small storage possibilities in mind for it. The Kallax series also contains options for all open or partially open storage, so there’s quite a lot to choose from.

Bullig Ikea Storage Box

For softer, lighter craft supplies, I like the look of this bamboo box which fits perfectly into any Kallax shelf unit.

Tjena Ikea Storage Box with Lid

Raskog Ikea Utility Cart

Round Canvas Storage Basket

round canvas storage - craft room ideasI’ve been really desperate to store all my longer dowels for my wall weavings in a container (instead of the floor!). There are so many cute baskets on Amazon, but I’m starting to gravitate towards this one.

TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp

While the list above has me excited about designing and organizing my space, nothing’s got me as intrigued as this really cool find from Amazon. It’s a dimmable, adjustable office desk lamp that has 7 brightness levels and 5 colour modes (from warm to cool). I was looking for a task lamp that was versatile, but had no idea that something like this existed! Can’t wait for it to arrive 🙂

Umbra Caddy Storage

Umbra caddy - craft room ideasI love Umbra products! They’re not only practical, but oh-so-stylish and I think something like this might be just the right thing for my all-purpose craft table.

Lurvig Ikea Cat House (for Kallax shelves!)

craft room ideas - cat house Ikea

I might (okay, insert ‘am’) crazy, but I fell in love with this cat house! You can leave it as is, remove the legs and hang on a wall, or simply insert into any Kallax shelving. My cats are very social, so I’d love for them to have some nooks and crannies to curl up in while I’m crafting 🙂

(There’s also another version without the legs that you can check out HERE.)

3 Simple Tips To Start Designing Your Own Craft Space

I hope this craft room mood board has given you some inspiration and ideas on designing your own craft space. Whether it’s a small corner in your bedroom or an entire room, here are my tips to get started:

1.  Collect images from magazines or Pinterest (just as I did HERE where I have an entire Board dedicated to craft rooms and craft organization to swoon over!).

2.  Determine the common colours. (Mine were white and wood tones which form the foundation of the space sans accessories).

3.  Create a craft room mood board with the big pieces first.  Start with furniture and some storage solutions just as I did in this post. Then you can have fun with smaller storage and colourful accessories later (that’ll be my NEXT step).

I’ll keep you up to date as my craft room comes together. I don’t anticipate this happening overnight (as much as I should wish to!), but I’m very excited about the process and, as always, am happy to take all of you lovely readers along for the ride.

Happy designing 🙂

Jelica, I’m so happy for you to have this gorgeous blank canvas to create your own unique space to create! It’s an exciting journey.
I found a lovely book for inspiration when I was creating my space for sewing and crafting. WHERE WOMEN CREATE by Jo Packham, ISBN 1-4027-1229-4.

I’m already in the midst of setting up and I’m excited about using the space when it’s ready. It’ll be so nice to work somewhere other than our dining room 😉 Thanks for the book suggestion!

Very nice. But I would have gotten everything at thrift stores and put wheels from Home Depot on a used table. You could have saved a fortune and imagine the fun looking.

I hear ya Helen. But actually, I’ve got some great hand-me-down furniture (free stuff, too!) that’s already in the space. It’ll work really well with the Ikea furniture which are mainly post-Christmas sale items. It’ll be a nice mix of old and new 🙂

Wow it’s already such a beautiful transformation! I love Umbra, too, and I haven’t seen that caddy before but I think I need it. Everything you’ve picked looks so pretty. Can’t wait to see the end result!

Thanks Tara! I’m already busy putting some of the Ikea furniture together as I write this. I’ll be integrating them with some other pieces I’ve been hanging onto for the last few years. Lots to do! But I’m seeing progress and enjoying the process 🙂
