2 Quick Ways To Hang A Weaving: Single vs. Double Loops

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned weaver, one of the funnest parts of weaving is deciding how you will hang your weave once it’s off the loom. While many of us focus on learning new weaving techniques – especially early on – how we finish off our weavings is just as important to the overall aesthetic. So in today’s tutorial, I wanted to share 2 quick ways to hang a weaving, namely using single or double loops to finish off your weave.

Okay, let’s dive in!

DIY Weaving | In this beginner level tutorial, learn how to hang your wall weaving two different ways using single or double loops. Create a simple and elegant design along the top of your wall weaving using these two quick methods.

2 QUICK WAYS TO HANG A WEAVING

Method #1:  Single Loops

One of the easiest ways to hang a wall weaving is by slipping your dowel through the loops along the top.

There is no real trick to this. Simply feed your dowel through the first loop and continue until you reach the last loop. You can do this while the weaving is still on the loom or once it’s off.

This is one of the most common methods and is probably the first one you learn when you start to weave. I still use this method and, when I do, I prefer to use a raw, unfinished wooden dowel to accentuate this clean, minimal and modern look.

Tip: Always make sure your dowel has enough space along the top to go through all those loops. There’s nothing worse than having small little loops leftover along the top with a dowel that’s a bit too thick to go through! This requires a bit of planning ahead and leaving off enough space along the top before removing your weaving from the loom.

Method #2:  Double Loops

I’ve always liked using double loops along the top of a wall weaving. It’s not very complicated and it adds a bit of interest, while also retaining a clean, minimal look.

Start by feeding the dowel through the first loop, just as you would when using the single loop method.

Next, keeping the loop open with your fingers…

…twist the dowel, making a figure 8 with the loop. This will create 2 smaller loops out of the original loop.

Then push the dowel through the second opening you’ve just made.

You’ve just created your first double loop.

Double your loops along the top of a wall hanging.

Just as you did with the first loop, continue working your way across by creating figure 8’s for each loop until you reach the final one.

NOTE: As you move across, you may not be able to twist your dowel to create each figure 8. Instead, you’ll rely on your fingers to make them.

Here’s a close look at how to double loop without twisting the dowel.

Simply twist the loop with your fingers to make a figure 8.

Then slip the second opening you’ve created over the dowel.

Twist the loop to create a second loop.

Insert into second loop.

Take a moment to position each double loop across the dowel so they are evenly spaced.

Re-position loops along the top of the dowel.

And voila! You’ve just created a simple and elegant double-loop design along the top.
