OUR DINING ROOM REFRESH

Before we dive into those pretty reveal pictures, let’s take a quick look at the before. The space looked pretty much the same during the first 10 years of its existence.

Here are two photos from the blog:

5 year comparison of dining room

Don’t get me wrong! I’ve been really happy with that solid acacia wood dining room table and buffet. It’s filled with lots of woodsy-ness and a lovely rustic feel.

Yet the dining room as a whole always felt a little ‘meh’ to me. It had no variation, no interesting texture, and none of those creams and whites that make up the rest of our Great Room.

The Tour: But now, with the addition of a bright new area rug, dining room chairs and some old accessories previously stored away, let me present the new and improved version:

Accessories: When it comes to the decor, I shopped my home for most of the accessories, pulling out both vases from storage, the faux greenery, book stack, black decorative bowl and couple of small serving bowls from the kitchen. (See full source list at the bottom of this post).

Prints & Frames: The modern frames and posters are recent purchases that I knew would add a perfect hit of contrast against that ornate mirror. (See full source list at the bottom of this post).

Task Lamp & Vase:  I kept the task lamp (an Amazon purchase from last year) and created a vignette using a vase, faux flowers and books for height, all of which I already owned. (See full source list at the bottom of this post).

Dining Chairs (from Article): In keeping with our bright and neutral colour palette of white/cream, black, and wood tones, I swapped out our old IKEA Henriksdal chairs with these creamy, spindle back white oak chairs from Article.

These are solid and comfortable, with the seat slightly curved and the back angled just enough for you to feel totally at rest without the fear of sliding clear off the seat in the middle of dinner! (Been there)

I am more than a little surprised to find these chairs are as comfortable as they are.

I spend half my time at home seated here with my laptop, whether its working remotely for my day job or writing blog posts, and am really happy with them so far.

Of course, none of it would matter if they were not so darn beautiful to look at (sorry hubby). Sigh. I can’t help staring at them.

All. The. Time. 🙂

They are painted a creamy white colour, but not so white to blind your eyes 😉 It’s difficult to see in photos, but you can even see the wood grain peaking through. A definite plus for me.

Area Rug (from Ruggable): The area rug is also a very, very special find.

But before I get carried away with its special-ness, let me talk about the look of it: It’s an off-white colour with a charcoal grey/black Moroccan-inspired pattern.

In hindsight, the dining area had been screaming for an area rug all along.

Not only is the rug the right look and feel that I was going for, it’s also – get ready for this – a machine-washable rug

Yep – I kid you not.

I purchased the rug (Damali Black & White, 6′ X 9′) from a company called Ruggable, which specializes in rugs that you can simply bundle up and throw into your washing machine. Just check out their ‘How It Works’ promo video.

When you purchase a rug from them, it comes in two pieces.

The top layer attaches to the velcro bottom and it’s that top layer that you remove and put into the wash.

BTW: I am not sponsored by this company. I had heard of them a couple of years ago and it wasn’t until recently that I knew – and hoped – that they might have a rug that would work in my dining area.

It’s still new to me, so I’ll have to do a proper review of it after the first spill and wash!

In the meantime, I would recommend you look online, including this review by Tanya over at Dans Le Lakehouse, who had her first positive experience washing her beautiful (and light-coloured) Ruggable rug.

Well, I really hoped you enjoyed taking the tour of our new dining room refresh! I’m so excited about this little makeover. It makes sitting here – as I write this blog post – all the more enjoyable 🙂

If you’re curious to know where to find the furniture and accessories (and close matches), I’ve got you covered!

Just check out the source list below.

DINING ROOM SOURCE LIST

*The following are similar to the other furniture pieces and decor in the space, but not an exact match:

  • Rustic Dining Table: I purchased ours at Home Hardware (a Canadian store), ages ago and found a similar one here. Online, you can also find affordable options at Target here, here, and here.
  • Clear Vase & Stems:  I found similar size vases on Amazon here and here and LOTS of small white blossoms to choose from on Amazon here.
  • White Vase & Faux Eucalyptus:  I purchased my tree trunk vase at my grocery store several years ago, but found a wedding supply outlet here (for rent, but you may be able to find out their supplier). I also purchased my eucalyptus from Michaels, but you can find plenty of Faux Eucalyptus Stems on Amazon, too.
  • Black Bowl (similar ones here)

I hope you enjoyed this tour of our dining room refresh. It was a labour of love trying to find just the right elements and mixing in some old favourites to give this space the facelift it needed 🙂
