Add some simple elegance this season with a DIY fern wreath. Mine took about 10 minutes to make and all leafy materials came straight from the dollar store!

Ferns are one of those classic, warm-weather plants that look elegant in just about any space. Whether they are part of an outdoor landscape or displayed in some hanging baskets, I’ve always loved their capacity to work with any colour or style of home.
And when used in crafts, these shapely, leafy plants add a soft, natural touch without much effort on the part of the crafter.
So when I saw them at my local dollar store (Dollarama), I knew they would be the perfect material to add a chic and minimal summer feel on my front door.
Follow along below, as I show you how easy – and QUICK! – it is to make your own DIY fern wreath.
MATERIALS NEEDED
NOTE: All materials below can be found at any local dollar store. If you don’t have one nearby, I’ve linked to other online products, for your convenience.
– Wispy Grapevine Wreath like this one. You can also use others like this one or these others (a 14″ ring wreath base is usually good for most standard-size front doors).
– Faux Ferns like these or these.
– Hot Glue Gun (low-temp setting is all you need)
– Hot Glue Sticks
– Small Wire Cutters
– Twine (for hanging)
STEPS: MAKE YOUR OWN DIY FERN WREATH
Step 1: Cut/Gather Fern Leaves
If your ferns come as a bunch, cut the stems from the base (or pull stems off one by one).
I used about 3 fern bunches from my local dollar store to create this wreath.
Step 2: Attach Fern Stems to Wreath Base
If your grapevine wreath has a lot of vines AND your fern stems are stiff enough, you may be able to stick them directly into/between the vines of the grapevine base without glue (see below).
Since this wispy wreath did not have as many bundled vines as other grapevine wreaths often do, I used hot glue to attach most of the stems.
Be sure to:
1) add a dollop of glue on the end,
2) insert about 2-3 inches into your grapevine base, and
3) press/hold in place for a few seconds, allowing the glue to dry.
Continue making your way around the wreath base.
Use shorter leaves along the interior portion, bending to create that ‘natural’ feel.
Step 3: Fluff Up Your Wreath To Create Depth
Because these particular fern stems are cheap, faux and flat, I bent them to create movement and depth.
Here is a side view after bending the leaves.
Step 4: Attach Twine & Hang Up
Attach a piece of twine along the back.
Now you’re ready to hang your wreath, indoors or out.
I really love how this DIY fern wreath turned out. It pops against our front door and adds a lovely, ‘summery’ feel on our front porch.
Happy wreath-making 🙂
