As Christmas approaches, a bit of holiday crafting is always on the agenda for me. It’s a fun way to personalize my decor in some small way. This year, I decided to add several DIY macrame ornaments on cinnamon sticks to my tree and I really loved how they turned out. They were incredibly simple to make – using just 1 knot – and added some whimsy to our Christmas tree.
If you love an easy craft project that requires just a few materials, then I think you’ll really enjoy this one.

MATERIALS NEEDED
– Macrame cord (I used a 3mm single twist/strand cord like this one, but you can use a variety of 3mm or 4mm cords that are 2-plya or 3-ply or even 4-ply on Amazon or on Etsy). I chose natural (undyed) cords, but you can find a range of colours to suit your aesthetic.
– Cinnamon sticks; mine were about 2.5-3 inches in length.
– Scissors
– Wire (or pet) comb (not pictured)
DIY MACRAME ORNAMENTS ON CINNAMON STICKS
STEPS
Step 1: Cut 4 Lengths of Macrame Cord
Cut 4 lengths of macrame cord, each measuring 24 inches long. Fold each in half before moving onto step 2.
Step 2: Attach Macrame Cord to Cinnamon Stick
Place the middle portion of one macrame cord over the cinnamon stick.
Next, tuck it underneath the stick, forming a loose loop.
Feed the cord through the loop and pull, forming a knot.
This is what is called a ‘Lark’s Head’ knot.
Slide the lark’s head knot to the side.
Next, attach the remaining 3 macrame cords to the cinnamon stick in the same way.
Secure the cinnamon stick to the clip board, allowing the clip to rest on the knots.
Step 3: Create the Body of the Ornament using the Half Hitch Knot (VIDEO Instruction)
Now you’re ready to create the body of the ornament using the ‘half hitch’ knot.
Follow along with the video tutorial below to make your first ornament:
Once you get the hang of this, you can even add a bit of flair with a stripe detail.
You can do this by swapping out one of the cords and replacing it with a coloured cord.
No special skills required to create a striped detail. Just follow the steps described above in the exact same way.

Make as many as you like – it’s easy once you get the hang of creating double half hitch knots.
I hope you enjoyed today’s tutorial on how to make these DIY macrame ornaments on cinnamon sticks. Once you get the hang of making one, it’ll be a breeze to make the rest!
