While sorting through my craft supplies recently, I decided – quite by accident – to make some DIY scrap burlap ribbon coasters for my new craft room. At the time, I happened to be organizing a mountain of burlap scraps while also drinking a cup of coffee – a dangerous combination for the clumsy-set (like me). I wisely decided to set my cup down on one of those burlap scraps and – voila! – an idea was born.
Although these coaster scraps are not intended for absorbing great big splashes, they are a great way to pick up those bits that sometimes drip along the sides of a cup or glass, leaving behind circles of evidence that you were once seated there 🙂 While strange – I know – I think they are such a cute and quirky addition to my creative space that I thought you all might enjoy creating this fun DIY, too 🙂

DIY Scrap Burlap Ribbon Coasters – SUPPLIES Needed
- Scrap burlap (I used a wide, 4-inch burlap ribbon that has a wired edge, like this one or this one)
- Scissors
- Acrylic paints and paint brush
- Fabric paint (I used ‘Tulip’ brand in white – this brand carries an assortment of colours)
- Acrylic paint sealer (I used this Mod Podge sealer, but others will do)
DIY Scrap Burlap Ribbon Coasters – STEPS
STEP 1 – Cut Coasters Off Ribbon Roll
Taking your burlap ribbon, cut your coasters to size – as many as you’d like. I happen to have a TON of square-ish burlap scraps that I had used on a previous craft project. And I’m not kidding – I had a LOT of scraps:
These all came off of a wired burlap ribbon roll, about 4 inches wide. I simply selected 4 random pieces that were still bent out of shape.
And then I simply flattened each one by gently ironing them on a medium setting.
STEP 2 – Optional: Paint & Seal Coasters
This is optional, but there are some benefits to this step.
Spray paint each coaster using a fabric paint (like this one). I used a white fabric spray paint to lighten the coasters up, but also to stiffen the material a bit. This will help prevent those raw edges from further unraveling.
I sprayed several layers, letting them dry in between each layer.
Once dried, you can also have the option of adding a splash of colour, using any acrylic paint you like. I used a dry brush technique, lightly dragging my paint brush along the wired edges of two of the four coasters.
Next, seal each coaster using this Mod Podge acrylic spray sealer. This will prevent your coasters from feeling sticky/tacky.
Tip: There is NO BACKING on these, but you can always glue FELT or CORK on the back of each coaster.
DIY Scrap Burlap Ribbon Coasters, Ready for Use
This was one of the easiest and most unexpected craft DIYs I’ve done in a long while, and I really love how it turned out.
I love these simple, no-fuss, DIY scrap burlap ribbon coasters so much! I keep them at my desk and use them often in my craft room (I’m using them as I write this post, in fact!). They remind me of how much satisfaction there is in making things yourself, no matter how the idea comes.
