Hello Friends! I’m back with my last installment for the “Simply Fall” series. I’ve had such a blast sharing all my decor and craft adventures for the season and today’s Fall Porch Stairs Refresh is a great way to cap off the series. I’m so excited to show you all the pics as well as my YouTube video where I show you how I decorated and DIY’d my way through to the final reveal!
Fall Porch Stairs Refresh – In the beginning…
Our front porch stairs are awkwardly designed. Open on one side and closed off on the other, I’ve never really known how to decorate them.
But at the last minute, after watching fellow-YouTuber and blogger, Christina from The DIY Mommy, decorate her front porch stairs & entire porch (catch her video here), I thought ‘why not give it a go?’ If nothing else, I’ll try it (and see how I can improve for next year 😉 )
My Fall Porch Stairs Design Takes a Detour
So, I decided on a design, a colour scheme, and traveled to our local greenhouse to see what I could find. Since it was late in the season, my colours of choice – soft orange mums, white pumpkins – were scarcely to be found anywhere 🙁
What I DID find made me decide to do something a little more bold: brilliant red mums, orange pumpkins, and a little DIY ingenuity to make my porch stairs come to life!
So after bringing everything home, I started decorating.
In sum, I used a mix of:
- Red mums
- Orange pumpkins in 3 different sizes
- A few gourds
- A handful of small pumpkins (that I painted off-white and sealed with Mod Podge acrylic sealer) (**See the DIY in the video at the bottom of this post).
Fall Porch Stairs Refresh & Tour
After a couple of days of decorating and a bit of DIY fun, here were the FINAL RESULTS 🙂
I also decided to add a few decor items on the front porch. While it’s still a work in progress (Burger, the cat is still deciding what he thinks 😉 ) I wanted the sitting area to complement the stairs in some small way.

The view from the porch is perhaps my favourite of all 🙂
I’m thrilled (and surprised) with how our fall porch stairs turned out. Even though it was late in the season, I managed to make the best of what was available and used a little DIY ingenuity to complete the look.

October 21, 2019 at 7:59 pmWow, I love your porch Jelica! Your original color choices would have been pretty, too, but I love how the bold colors turned out! The red flowers are so pretty against the stonework. <3

November 17, 2019 at 8:01 pmThanks Tara! Now that I have a good idea of what works on our front porch stairs, I’m excited to try different colours for next year. But, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the red mums 🙂

September 7, 2022 at 9:10 amDo you remember what size mums you purchased? I have smaller stairs also. Thanks !

October 1, 2022 at 11:56 amI believe these were 9 inch pots (if memory serves). They reached the height of the stairs (also about 9 inches). This way, the blooms were the only bits that added height, but without taking up too much space. Hope this helps!
