Every year, I like to open up my home and take you on a tour of my home decorated for the holidays.
Each time, I like to change things up a bit to keep things interesting for me and to give you a chance to acquire new ideas or inspiration for your homes, too.
This year, I decided to lean into a moodier holiday colour scheme loaded with tones of muted reds, browns, copper and soft gold tones contrasted against all those lovely greens that we get to incorporate at this time of year.
Still modern, but with a moodier and warmer colour palette.
Although most of my holiday decor is often purchased locally, where I can, I’ve linked up products I’ve purchased online (or ones similar) and any tutorials that might be of interest to the crafters out there!
Without further ado, please come on in!
A MODERN CLASSIC CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR
Holiday Foyer
Upon entering our front foyer, you are greeted with a subtle sprinkling of holiday greenery, including this diy wreath.
Made with a metal hoop (any size will work) wrapped with a few stems of faux eucalyptus (like these) and tied off with this absolutely gorgeous wine red velvet ribbon, this diy wreath added a perfect little pop of holiday cheer.
Just behind the foyer gallery wall is this pre-made swag I found several years ago at Home Sense Canada.
I added this chocolate brown ribbon for a more sophisticated, elegant look.
I always like to add some garland above the entryway door. This year, I decided to use fresh cedar stems tucked behind a few nails inserted along the top and the same wine red velvet ribbon used on the wreath to keep things coordinated.
Moody Holiday Living Room
Once you pass the pocket doors of the foyer, you enter our Great Room space where the ‘living room’ is the first area you encounter.
Here, I leaned into a warm, moody holiday look with natural, muted tones and a bit of sparkle!
I absolutely LOVE these harmony bells on the coffee table. They are oversized and a perfect way to add some vintage rustic charm.
All the greenery on my coffee table is faux, purchased at Michaels.
I created this arrangement with a mix of faux cedar (similar to these), magnolia leaves (similar to these), red berries (like these), and two other types of greenery.
The muted red throw was from my local Home Sense Canada, but there are similar throws online here, here, and here.
We’ve purchased this pre-lit, 9-foot tall Christmas tree at Home Depot several years ago (you can still find similar ones at varying heights at Home Depot).
It’s very realistic, very tall (!), and some of the lights have stopped working. BUT, there is always a quick work-around by using some twinkle lights and battery-operated candles, where needed.
In keeping with the moodier tones of my holiday decor, I used a variety of neutral ornaments alongside this brown velvet ribbon, these pheasant feathers, and dogwood clippings I collected last year (also available on Etsy) to add some architecture to the tree.
As I did in last year’s holiday home tour, I included a trio of wreaths hung on our windows. These wreaths were grocery store finds from several years ago – and they hold up incredibly well. (I’ve used them in various scenarios, including this high impact wreath gallery wall from just a few years back).
My only addition to each of them was this brown velvet ribbon, folded in half 3 times, then inserted directly into each wreath. It’s not conventional, but I liked the casual, ‘bundled’ look of the velvet ribbon within each wreath.
Over by our television and media cabinet, I sprinkled in more fresh cedar.
I placed the fresh cedar (store-bought, but you can find a large assortment of fresh and faux here) along the top of the cabinet and added in these dried orange slices on Amazon (find similar ones here), and white pinecones that I collected a few years ago (you can also find them online).
Next to the media cabinet, I created a swag of cedar from leftover clippings.
I made this pretty swag by using craft wire to bundle the clippings together, then tied this brown velvet ribbon around the top, and attached the swag using jute twine to the base of this floor lamp.
Over by our armchairs, I filled a wooden bowl with just 3 elements to create a simple holiday centerpiece: oversized pinecones (like these or these), dried orange slices, and faux cedar (similar to these). So simple!
In case you’re wondering, these pinecones are real! Sugar pinecones, for example, are known to grow up to a foot long and I was lucky enough to have found some to purchase locally (at Home Sense Canada and at Michaels).
You should definitely keep an eye out for them in those shops (or you can explore these options on Etsy here).
Holiday Dining Room & Kitchen
Across from our ‘living room’ area is our dining room. It is simply decorated with a mix of fresh pine branches, faux berries (similar to these), and red votive candles (similar to these) that I placed in small hurricane glasses for a bit of sparkle.
In our kitchen, I added a bit of holiday cheer with a mix of wooden trees, greenery, and baubles in thrifted bowls for a traditional ‘old world’ look.
(BTW: In case you’re wondering, I purchased this soft and lovely charcoal plaid pillow cover (pictured above) from Urban Barn Canada. It’s currently on sale!).
The stunning, lifelike garland you see along the top of our kitchen cabinets is new (I used 3 in total) and I couldn’t be happier with the look and feel of it.
It is a ‘real touch’ Norfolk pine faux garland that I found at Decors Veronneau, a Montreal-based company that sells a variety of home decor and seasonal pieces. (Note: It does not come with the ribbon. I simply attached this red velvet ribbon to the garland, which I purchased separately).
This viral garland has been everywhere, but tends not to be easy to track down in Canada for some reason! (Unfortunately, at the time of this posting, Decor Veronneau has completely sold out of this garland, so keep an eye out for it next year!). Typically, you can find the same type of garland on Afloral (currently shipping within the US) and, increasingly, in some Etsy shops, too (with global shipping).
Moving onto our kitchen counters: they are a bit more styled this year with a bit of greenery, a vintage pitcher (gifted to me by my mother-in-law; in fact, hubby has memories of having milk served from this pitcher when he was a child – lucky!), and vintage print purchased on a recent trip to Niagara-On-The-Lake.
Right off the kitchen is this diy gallery wall and console table that also got the holiday treatment.
I added a wreath I made using the same method as our foyer wreath: metal hoop + faux eucalyptus stems wrapped around the hoop, adorned with a dark red velvet ribbon.
I attached the wreath by wrapping the ribbon along the top and attaching it the back of this frame using duck tape – easy-peasy!
So there you have it! Our Modern Classic Christmas Home Tour is officially over.
Burger, for one, is happy it’s finally done (mommy, stop taking pictures and come and pet me) 🐱
Although there are a few other areas of the home that I’ve decorated for the holidays (including our second tree in the basement, which I included in my recent diy candy cane ornament tutorial), today’s tour included all the main areas of our home that most people will see during the holidays.
I hope you enjoyed it and that you got some inspiration for your own holiday decorating this year.
Happy holidays,
