Today, I’m sharing how to embrace autumn with a more modern approach. In this modern fall decor guide, you’ll find ideas that bring in cozy textures, warm tones, and natural elements. They will seamlessly blend into your existing home style – all without the need for over-the-top accents (or bright orange decor).

A Shift in Fall Decorating
In recent years, we’ve seen a major shift in autumn decorating. From bright orange hues – been there, done that – to more subdued tones of rust, burgundy, brown, and even olive. Today’s seasonal decorating is much more natural – which I’m totally on board with! – blending easily into our existing home decor.
I’m still a fan of using whatever colour or accents suit your personal style – you do you! But the KEY TAKEAWAY is a shift towards having MORE OPTIONS available (pssst, not just orange!). We no longer HAVE to use pumpkins everywhere or rely on strictly orange tones to feel that cozy, fall aesthetic. Sometimes, this just doesn’t suit our home interiors – and that’s okay.
So with that in mind, here are some IDEAS and STYLE OPTIONS to consider, as you transition into fall.
MODERN FALL DECOR GUIDE: 9 Decorating Ideas To Elevate Your Home
1. Embrace a Warm, Neutral Colour Palette

Soft, earthy tones like taupe, camel, rust, terracotta, burgundy, brown, plum, and olive INSTANTLY warm up a space. There are so many iterations of these colours. Choose a few that work well within your space. They’ll add an unexpected richness and sophisticated look.
Tip: Whatever hues you choose, keep them in harmony with your home’s current aesthetic. That way, your fall touches will enhance the space instead of feeling out of place.
2. Style with Natural-Looking Stems

If you only make ONE CHANGE for fall, let it be adding natural-looking stems. Sometimes, that’s all you need to add a warm, seasonal aesthetic indoors. Think: brown magnolia branches, terracotta-toned eucalyptus, dried hydrangeas, burgundy baby’s breath, or fall meadow florals.
If you LOVE COLOUR, you can still opt for natural-looking stems – you just have to dig a little.

Take these Japanese maple leaves, for example. They added a pop of colour in our dining space, while feeling realistic and in keeping with a modern, refined aesthetic.
3. Add Found & Natural Objects

Pinecones, acorns, and even twisted branches are a lovely way to add a fall touch, when styled intentionally. Group smaller items in a low dish, scatter large ones on shelves, place long pieces in a vase or hang a single large branch on a wall. Sky’s the limit – just be intentional about it and select a few key spots without being overly fussy.

Collected items like these add personality, make your home unique, and – when found – are completely free.
4. Make a Front Door Wreath

DIY fall wreaths do not need to be complicated. There are options for ALL SKILL LEVELS. Use dried florals, branches, or even collected foliage from your backyard for something organic and unique.

Whether it’s simple or sculptural, a front door wreath is a beautiful way to welcome fall with your own personal touch.

5. Add Vintage Touches

Regardless of your home style – modern, rustic, art deco or just plain quirky – a vintage piece (like the FRAMED ART ABOVE) will add a cozy touch to your space.
Need more vintage decor ideas? Think: a patterned jar, old print, old brass candlesticks, or even a single feather in an ornate vase.

These details may be small, but they bring so much WARMTH AND CHARACTER that will make your fall vibe feel more complex, layered and lived-in.
6. Decorate With Fall Produce

When we think of fall produce, we naturally think of pumpkins. But don’t limit yourself. There is SO MUCH SEASONAL PRODUCE to choose from: pears, acorn squash, pomegranates, and apples can bring in subtle seasonal touches. Or choose gourds – as I did above – which added an unexpected, quirky touch to our fall great room space last year.
Arrange them in a vintage bowl or wooden tray for an easy, no-fuss centerpiece, or scatter them on a surface or as part of a vignette. You can also go with mini pumpkins – both in orange and white – which, when styled intentionally, can work beautifully within a modern space.

REMEMBER, IT’S ALL ABOUT OPTIONS. Choose the colours that work well in your home and you can’t fail.
7. Use Baskets, Liberally

I have always loved using baskets in my home. They add so much texture, warmth, and function, all at the same time. There are SO MANY STYLES to choose from: whether you love a classic rattan or seagrass, or you love a good farmhouse stripe, or a modern wire basket, you have to love how versatile they are when it comes to style and function.
For fall, I prefer using natural materials like jute, seagrass or rattan in my space, but, honestly, whatever suits your space is best.
8. Decorate with Dried Florals and Foliage

Dried florals are a great option and a go-to for many of us in autumn. If you’re looking for options, try goldenrod (so easy to dry), wheat, or a sculptural dried mix of stems in a glass or ceramic vase.
The ONES I STYLED ABOVE were collected on my rambles with my husband. They are all weeds and wild fauna of some sort or another (honestly, I have no idea what they are!). They were collected while they were already dying – I simply loved the natural, gnarled, sculptural look of them.
But if you prefer something a bit more conventionally pretty, try drying wild flowers like the goldenrod, below. Goldenrod is easy to dry and so pretty mixed with other wild florals.

These kinds of collected items add so much personality – and they’re completely free.
9. Layer In Throw Blankets

Throw blankets instantly add a feeling of warmth and comfort. But they’re NOT JUST FOR THE SOFA. Drape them over an accent chair, over a dining room table chair, at the foot of your bed, and on a bench in your entryway.

Stick to throw blankets that COMPLEMENT YOUR HOME’S COLOUR PALETTE to tie the room together.
FINAL THOUGHTS

You don’t need over-the-top displays to make your home feel like fall. Take inspiration from this modern fall decor guide and welcome the season in a way that feels natural, elevated, and aligned with your home’s existing style.
Happy decorating,
