Need a little motivation to reset after the holidays? I know I always do. So today I thought I’d share some of my best tips for a new year home reset that are easy, actionable and, above all, don’t cost a thing.
5 QUICK TIPS FOR A NEW YEAR HOME REST
If you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to these past few weeks, then here it is in a nutshell: organizing, decluttering, and re-decorating.
Nothing too onerous, mind you. All simple, do-able little projects that I’d been saving when I had a bit of free time.
So if you need some inspiration or motivation to do the same – or maybe a good hard push 😉 – here are a few simple things you can do this weekend to get started.
1. Declutter & Donate
In the days or weeks following Christmas, the best thing you can do for your peace of mind, is to declutter.
As you put your Christmas tree and decorations away (that is, if you celebrate Christmas), use that time to determine if there are any decorations that you no longer use and can donate.
For those of you who follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you know I’ve been busy doing exactly that!
Then move onto at least 1 area of your home that you’d like to declutter. Whether that’s your wardrobe, your pantry, or even a single chest of drawers, pick at least one area that you can edit quickly.
Then gather what you’ve decluttered, pack them into donation boxes or bags, and get them out the door!
Unless absolutely necessary, plan to donate as soon as possible. If not the same week, then the following one. Nothing is worse than having a pile of donations taking up precious space (I know from experience how stressful that can be!).
2. Organize & Minimize
If you are already in the process of decluttering, then it’s only natural for you to organize the same areas you’ve just decluttered.
As I decluttered my holiday decor, for instance, I took the time to repack and re-label my storage boxes.
Nothing fancy, mind you! A lot of my storage containers are basic cardboard boxes I save for just such a purpose.
So whether you decide to tackle something other than decor this season – your wardrobe, kitchen, or bathroom, for example – the principles of decluttering and reorganizing those spaces are the same.
Even if you pick just ONE area you need to edit, it will make such a difference!
3. Wash Textiles
If you hosted Christmas this year, then while your washing the bedding from your guest room(s), why not wash some of the textiles from your living room, like cushion covers, throw blankets, and pillow covers, too.
While I know many of you save it all for your spring cleaning, I prefer to spread out these cleaning tasks throughout the year.
It’s often easier to add 1 or 2 additional loads of laundry into my normal laundry routine than to try and set aside a designated time later on.
4. Quick Kitchen Edit: Fridge, Freezer, and Pantry
After the holidays, you may want to take a fresh look at your fridge, freezer, and pantry contents. If you hosted Christmas, you will likely have more food and snacks than you normally do.
Take this opportunity to do a quick edit (or thorough, if you prefer) of each area. Pull things out, check expiration dates, give everything a wipe down.
And if you’re like us and you did not host this year, you can still take the time to do a fast edit of each spot. Even pulling out a few expired items or wiping down a couple of pantry shelves will improve your home’s overall state of cleanliness and organization.
5. Redecorate Key Areas of Your Home
Once the Christmas decor comes down, your home can feel somewhat bare. Add back a few vignettes to keep your space from feeling too empty.
I like things to be relatively minimal after the holidays, so restyling a few surfaces keeps things feeling spare, but cozy, too.
No need to put too much effort into it: A decorative bowl on an empty table or a bouquet of flowers (fresh or faux) will help things feel styled and fuss-free.
Just a bit of a refresh will do the trick!
I hope these quick tips for a new year home reset have helped – even a little!
Sometimes all it takes is a reminder of those small things you can do for a new year home reset that’ll have you feeling organized and ready for the year ahead.
