There’s something about summer that calls for organizing spaces that feel lighter, fresher and have a bit more room to breathe. For me, it’s not about a rigid sort of minimalism – far from it. Instead, it calls for embracing a kind of functional beauty. It’s a way to organize my home with items that also bring warmth and style into our space. Whether it’s choosing natural materials like bamboo and wicker baskets to corral things or swapping out heavy throw blankets for lightweight linen, making this subtle seasonal shift helps my home feel fresh while keeping it tidy. In today’s post, I’m sharing some of my favourite summer home organization ideas from around our house – simple, practical ways that have worked for us and might spark ideas for you in your own home as you bring a bit of functional beauty to your space.

What Functional Beauty Means To Me
The way I see it, functional beauty is all about using objects in your home that serve a purpose and look good, too. A vintage bowl that stores my keys, a thrifted basket holding my slippers, or an elegant soap dispenser in the kitchen – all practical pieces that add warmth and personality in my home.
But also, it’s not about following trends or copying whatever the latest influencer is into (lately). It’s about choosing what feels right for you in your space. The goal? Making sure that the items you use everyday enhance both the beauty and functionality of your home – on your own terms. After all, it’s your home to enjoy.
My Favourite Functional and Beautiful Organizing Solutions
Keeping in mind a light and breezy aesthetic – perfect for summer – I love weaving natural warmth into an organized space. Natural textures, lightweight textiles, and a softness in our spaces helps our home feel both calm and welcoming.
Here are some of my personal favourite summer home organization ideas I’m loving around our house right now.
IN THE FOYER

I recently shared a full tour of our Summer Foyer Styling, and I wanted to highlight a few tidy, yet ‘summery’ spots in this space.
Next to our bench is a thrifted basket for my slippers (just barely seen in this pic). It’s located where I naturally slip off my outdoor footwear and easily slide into my cozy indoor slippers.

Directly opposite the bench is our buffet table – our main drop zone. It holds bowls – wood and ceramic – and a vintage lidded jar that stylishly hides keys. This assortment of handmade vessels provides ample places to toss random things like mail or cards while keeping this area neat and tidy.

Close to the front door is our foyer closet where woven baskets line the top shelf. Each basket stores a variety of lightweight scarves, small purses, and other odds and ends – keeping everything orderly but accessible, ready for a quick outing. And even though these baskets are tucked away inside the closet, I love using storage that’s natural and beautiful to look at, too.

I often get asked about these baskets – part of the Branas line at IKEA – but I don’t typically see the smaller versions (like my own) online so you may need to ask someone there while visiting. However, you can find similar baskets elsewhere like this style and this one (perfect for higher shelves).
IN THE LIVING ROOM

Comfort and flow help guide how I’ve organized this space. A blanket ladder at the back of our living room displays extra throw blankets – tidy but always ready for cooler summer evenings.

Next to the blanket ladder and hidden from view is a long, sturdy woven basket that holds magazines (anyone still own any like me?), hidden extension cords, and my go-to throw blanket thrown on top – keeping this corner comfy and clutter-free.

This particular basket – another IKEA purchase – has been discontinued, but you can find similar ones elsewhere here, here and here.
Another basket that’s kept clutter at bay in this spot is this black and white striped round beauty below.

It basically functions as a fancy ‘junk drawer’ – stuffed with soft glasses cases, cleaning cloths, cables, and random bits (overdue for a purge, really). But honestly, it adds such beauty and charm and keeps this area looking neat, so I really can’t complain. While it was originally purchased at my local Home Sense some years back, you can find similar baskets here, here and here.
IN THE KITCHEN

Sure, I dream of one day updating our kitchen, but that doesn’t mean I ignore it now. It’s still the heart of our home, where organization meets beauty in our daily routine of preparing coffee, meals, and during snack-time, too.
On our kitchen counter is this acacia wood salad bowl – used instead as a fruit bowl – and doubling as a decorative piece, bringing a lot of warmth to this space.

For a long time, I used it sparingly, as a salad bowl when guests were over. But, after a while, I hated to put it away and decided to repurpose it as a fruit bowl to warm up our kitchen – so glad I did. I purchased our bowl at our local grocery store, but there are loads of varieties online like this one or this one.
Sitting by the sink are these lovely labeled clear glass soap pumps – practical and pretty.

They came as a pair with waterproof labels that have held up through countless washes since purchasing them a couple of years ago – a small thing I appreciate. I did eventually swap out the original silver pumps for these ones – the original ones tended to stick, making it hard to control how much soap came out. But, all in all, a solid purchase that keeps this spot pretty and functional.
Elsewhere in the kitchen, we have several bamboo drawer organizers that keep cutlery, utensils, and odds and ends in our junk drawer neat and with natural, sustainable appeal.

One of my favourite kitchen additions, there are so many varieties with different types of compartments and organizing systems suitable for large and small drawers online.
IN THE CRAFT ROOM & STUDIO

Creativity’s challenging when your space feels chaotic – anyone else feel that? I’ve shared lots of craft room organization ideas, from cabinets and cubbies to more unconventional solutions for bits and bobs here on the blog, but these are a few of my favourite ways to keep things both tidy and stylish.
Below, these affordable dollar store white plastic baskets with handles were such a score for me a couple of years ago. Ideal for organizing yarn and roving for my Etsy store and great for moving inventory around easily.

(And, yes, these are IKEA Kallax storage cubbies – the baskets fit perfectly in there!).
On a nearby work table, are these clear, cylinder vases that hold dried florals, driftwood, rulers and all sorts of long craft tools to keep things from getting too unruly.

(If you don’t have a dollar store nearby, you can also find them online.)

Last, but certainly not least, in my craft room there’s also an assortment of thrifted baskets that soften this all-white space, adding warmth while organizing weaving and other projects. Plus, these woven baskets will often double as my craft totes that I can carry around the house, crafting anywhere I like.

Ideas To Try in Your Home This Summer
This is just the tip of the iceberg, as they say. There are so many ways that I like to blend function and beauty in my home for summer. And it’s really not that difficult to do! If you want to have more of your pretty and practical pieces living out in the open in your home this season, start small – it’s always the best way:
1. Pick ONE spot – whether it’s an entryway, near your living room sofa, or your kitchen counter.
2. Gather the everyday items you use and pick out the prettier ones. These can be practical containers you own or even ones you can thrift.
3. Then, place these items in the area you wish to organize, arranging them thoughtfully. Make them part of a vignette with other useful objects around. Or let the object BE the statement – baskets are ideal for that.
Letting Functional Beauty Live in Plain Sight
While you don’t NEED to have everything out, selecting key pieces that offer both beauty and function can make a space feel warm and relaxed. Putting too much away can feel sterile, but too much out can feel messy. Only you know what the right balance is in your home.
Either way, by letting the useful things that you like the look of, live openly, they can become part of your overall design aesthetic. In this way, you’ll create a home that feels light, breezy, and lived-in – set up to embrace the calm that summer brings.
Happy organizing,
