Pet Door Installation Using the WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Saw: Our Review

I’m so excited to be collaborating with WORX, a company specializing in innovative yard and DIY tools. Today, I’m sharing our thoughts – both mine and Mr Fix’s – specifically on the WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Saw (a Reciprocating and Jigsaw rolled into one y’all!). It’s a compact and powerful tool that I think both the veteran and novice DIY’er will find hard to resist. Powerful enough for him, but compact and easy to handle for her. When WORX contacted me to see if I’d be interested in trying it out, I was eager to put it to the test on our latest DIY: installing a pet door in the basement – right next to my NEW CRAFT SPACE! (yep, it’s finally coming together, and this crafty girl couldn’t be more excited – but that’s for another day).

In today’s tutorial, I’ll be sharing our review of the WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Saw: how to use it, a few tests we conducted, and how easy it was to use when installing our new pet door.

How To Use the WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Tool:

Once we unpacked the box it came in, Mr Fix tested out the WORX 2-in-1 tool’s component parts.

To change it from a jigsaw into a reciprocating saw, just push the large red button to unlock it.

There are 4 blades to choose from.

Four blades included in the WORX Cordless Axis multi-purpose saw.

The blades attach easily; just insert and lock into place.

When converting back into a jigsaw, just push the button to release it. Then remove the blade and turn it around, so the blade faces out, ready for jigsaw use.

We then decided to test out the blades on a few different materials.

First up was a birch wood branch (one that Mr Fix picked up for me in the woods for my various styling projects). Using the blade labeled “Wood” and the reciprocating saw feature, Mr Fix cut through it with ease.

Next was a chipboard that Mr Fix needed cut using the “Timber” blade and jigsaw feature.

Again, another nice, even cut.

Finally, I thought we might try a copper pipe I recently purchased for my wall weavings. Although there is no “copper” blade, we decided to use the one marked for “metal.”

Mr Fix cut through it easily, though it was not as smooth a cut and required a metal file to smooth it out.

Not too shabby, though.

Overall, Mr Fix and I really liked how easy and powerful this tool was to use.

How We Used the WORX Cordless 2-in-1 Saw To Install a Pet Door

The first full DIY project that we used the WORX cordless 2 in 1 saw on was this pet door installation.

We decided to add a pet door in the basement on a door that separates the unfinished portion of the basement and the newly-renovated, finished portion. On the unfinished side of the basement is where our cats – Burger and Frite – access their kitty litter.

The STEPS

Step 1: Remove Door & Lay Flat

We laid our door on two saw horses.

Step 2: Use Template to Measure Placement of Door

First, cut out the appropriately sized template – we used the medium size.

Next, mark the mid-point along the bottom of the door. leaving a minimum of 3 inches from the bottom edge.

Tape the template on the door and trace an outline.

Step 4: The WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Saw – Using the Jigsaw

Taking your jigsaw – in this case, we were using our new WORX cordless 2 in 1 saw – insert into one of the holes, and begin sawing from one drilled hole to the next.

We used the blade marked “aluminum” (and not the “wood” blade) since we were looking for precision cuts. You can see the light is turned on (automatically) and the debris blows out as you cut. A fantastic feature!

Mr Fix completed the cuts and was even able to get into the corners with the WORX 2-in-1 saw with ease. Overall, this was a smooth, even cut.

Step 5: Attaching the Pet Door

There are 2 sides to the PetSmart Plastic Pet Door.

The one contains an “exterior” frame (intended to face outdoors when used for this purpose) and 4 black “core” pieces that run along the interior sides of the door.

The second contains an “interior” frame with a flap (meant to face the interior of your home) and a snap cover (not pictured), when you don’t wish your pet to go outdoors.

Steps for attaching the frames:

First, cut the 4 black core pieces to size as outlined in the instructions. Attach to the “exterior” frame.

Taking one of the 6 nylon screws included in the package, insert into any hole.

Place frame on one side of the door. In the view below, you can see Mr Fix placing it on the underside of the door.

Next, place the “interior” frame on the alternate side of door.

As you do, make sure that the nylon screw from the frame below goes all the way through the corresponding hole on the top frame.

Push nylon screw all the way through to the other side.

Next, attach one of the 6 hex nuts, also included in the package, at the top. This will ensure that the two frames are held together on both sides. Repeat for all holes.

For a closer look, you can see all the nylon screws and hex nuts fully attached below:

Next, re-attach your door to the door frame and cut the nylon screws with wire cutters.

Testing the Door!

We recommend that you coax your cat or dog through the door using treats and by keeping the plastic flap taped up (or not attached at all) until your pet gets acclimatized to the door.

Our cats were a little uncertain about it…

…and definitely needed a helping hand, so to speak.

Victory!

Now it was Burger’s turn. We removed the flap this time to make it even easier.

With the flap, it will take some practice, so for now, we are going flap-less. But for outdoor use, just tape the flap up for a bit until you can train up your pet(s) to use it.

Our Final Thoughts About the WORX Cordless 2-in-1 Saw

***Overall, we think the WORX Cordless 2 in 1 Saw is a great investment. It passed our tests for everyday DIY project use and here’s why:

  • Ease of Use: It is incredibly easy to use (a BIG plus!). Uncomplicated, which is the way we like it.
  • Compact & Powerful: We both love how compact and powerful it is. For its size, it’s quite powerful. It didn’t have any trouble with the cuts that we tested. I couldn’t help thinking that it seemed to cut through ‘like butter’ as the saying goes. Great for rough cuts as well as precision cuts – really versatile.
  • Versatile: Mr Fix was especially impressed with its versatility, especially if you don’t have a large shop, this tool is a nice one to own.
  • Built-In Blower & Light: The built-in dust blower and automatic light were extremely useful for making clear, precision cuts.
  • Portable: We also think the cordless feature is a big bonus, making it a highly portable tool.
  • Interchangeable Battery: For anyone purchasing a tool from the WORX Axis line, the 20V battery can be used on a whole range of their products, too.

Our suggestions:

  • Battery Levels: Showing power levels would make it easier to know when the battery needs to be charged up.
  • More Detailed Instructions: The instruction manual could be more detailed for the novice user (like me!). More text to accompany the pictures would go a long way in helping newbie DIYers.

But, overall, it passed all our tests for our at-home uses. It feels well made and only time will reveal it’s durability. A big thumbs up on our end!
