The Unrelenting Popularity of “Hygge”

Have you noticed just how popular the Danish concept of “Hygge” (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is these days? It has had a big influence in the way we think about home design and decor and without any indication of slowing down. But while the idea is not new to the Danes, it is relatively new to us in North America. And no wonder. “Hygge” speaks to our collective impulse to find ways to get cozy, comfortable and, above all, content.

What exactly is “Hygge”?

For those of you not yet in the know, “hygge” is a Danish word that describes a general quality of coziness and contentment that, in turn, generates a feeling of well-bring within us. Although “hygge” is regarded as an integral part of the Danish culture, the Swedish idea of “mys,” the Norwegian “koselig,” and the Dutch “gezelig” also speak to the impulse to be cozy and content. However it is known, I think it is safe to say that we can all get behind the concept and desire to feel comfortable at home.

But how do we implement this idea in our own lives? After all, we in North America and elsewhere have created an environment in which we are constantly struggling to create a work/life balance.

While I don’t have a ready answer to this dilemma, what I do know for sure is that my home is my sanctuary.

Home is the one place that I feel most content. It is here that I can create the closest thing to the Danish concept of hygge.  And in those dark, cold days of winter, hygge must reign supreme if I am to maintain my sanity 🙂

To get that full hygge experience at home, I believe it’s important to explore all 5 senses for maximum impact. This includes: Touch, Taste, Sight, Smell, and Sound.  Each one plays a key role in optimizing my own experience of comfort at home and probably yours, too.

So here they are – my top tips on how to hygge like a pro this winter.

HOW TO HYGGE LIKE A PRO THIS WINTER

Create Cozy Spots (Touch)

It goes without saying (but probably bears repeating):  Make your home as cozy as possible. Layer with textiles like the warm throw blanket, faux fur pillow, and rug in the source list of cozy home finds above. It will make a BIG difference in how you feel at home.

Think of it like creating understated luxury at home. It’ll make you, your family, and any guests that may pop by for a visit want to snuggle up and stay a while 🙂

Unplug From Social Media (Sight, Sound)

While many of us use social media regularly in our work, business and social life, it may be a good idea to unplug at least one day a week. Like the trending idea of “Meatless Mondays” why not try “No Social Media Saturdays”?

In its place, take the time to listen to soft music, read a good book, or stay in and watch a movie. To set the mood, turn out all the lights leaving only a lamp light on or a lit candle. Your heart and mind will thank you for it.

Indulge In A Hot Beverage (Taste)

Cold winter days and nights call out for hot beverages, don’t ya think? Whether you are a tea person, a coffee person, or something in between, sipping on a hot drink that warms you inside is the perfect, light indulgence.

If you’re not too fussy about seasonal-specific beverages, you can try my easy Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe. (But be careful with this one. You may find yourself drinking the whole thing all too quickly! It’s really tasty 🙂 ).

Scent Your Home (Smell)

One of the most understated yet luxurious things I do is fill my home with soft, all-natural scents. Whether it’s lighting a beeswax candle or using an essential oil diffuser, I love creating a therapeutic environment at home.

Recently, I shared how to slowly transition from using toxic plug-in refills by showing you How To Re-Use Air Fresheners Using Essential Oils instead. It’s my favourite home hack of late. I just love how this simple DIY has expanded my use of therapeutic essential oils at home.

Final Thoughts

I know how easy it is to get into a rut once winter hits, but hopefully, these tips on How To Hygge PLUS my 10 Cozy Home Finds will inspire you to carve out a bit of that cozy feeling at home this season 🙂
