Our Great Room Update (+ How I’m Cat-Proofing Our Chairs)

Chairs are kind of an obsession of mine. Especially, chairs that have interesting shapes or architectural features.

Whether it’s finding the perfect chairs for our dining room, buying vintage chairs (waiting to be updated!), or just replacing worn-out or damaged ones, a great chair, or set of chairs, can really change the entire vibe of a space. So when I found the perfect pair of mid-century modern accent chairs for our living room, I couldn’t wait to show them off on Instagram (multiple times, I might add) and to share with all of you lovely readers my latest finds.

When walking into our Great Room space, the first thing you’ll see are the lovely backs of our new accent chairs.

This ‘cat’s-eye-view’ really speaks to my love for architectural details in chairs!

Before adding these lovelies into our Great Room, I had to give in to the fact that my beloved, plush armchairs …

…had seen better days.

Our old chairs needed replacing.

And this was mainly due to a couple of very sweet – but naughty – little cats. After a field day – MANY field days – with our chairs, our cats always slept like babies 🙂

After researching re-upholstery options and realizing that the cost of labour and materials would be 3X the cost of the original chairs (I kid you not – it was RIDICULOUSLY expensive!), I decided to replace our chairs with the Otio Mist Gray Oak Lounge Chairs from Article.

My Cat-Proofing Strategy & Furniture Protectors

We’ve had our new chairs for a little over 3 months now and my cat-proofing strategy is working really well – at least 90% of the time 😉

Here are the 3 main ways I’ve kept our cats from scratching our new chairs:

1. Temporary Coverings: For the first month, I covered up most of the chairs with some small 2 X 3 foot white faux rugs (pictured with our old plush chairs above). You can find various ones on Amazon. The rugs are decorative and effective at training the cats to see the chairs as comfortable places to sit, but not ‘scratch-worthy.’ Once I removed the rugs, the cats were not much interested in scratching. That is, until the last few days! Arg! So, as recently as yesterday, I’ve put the faux rugs back on to get them trained up again.

2. Negative Reinforcement: Verbally deterring them whenever they get the itch to scratch. “No, no, no!” I say, using my stern voice! It definitely catches their attention. But you have to be consistent and respond immediately.

3. Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging positive feedback when they are at the scratching post nearby – this REALLY works well! It’s simply not enough to have a scratching post available. You need to encourage activity there. I even sing and play with the cats at the post with a song I made up called “the tower of fun!” Silly, but true. I make a point of getting up from whatever I am doing to encourage play at that spot. And now, our cat Frite, often runs towards the scratching post whenever he needs some extra love and attention 🙂

Cats and furniture tips

4. Furniture Protectors: While faux fur rugs on the chairs are a great, decorative option, my goal is to use this tactic as little as possible. After all, I love the look and shape of the chairs as they are. So, after some research, I found these Kohree brand furniture protectors (an Amazon’s Choice product) and place them wherever the cats have tried to scratch. It’s been a real game-changer!

Can you see the furniture protector on this side of the chair?

These are fabulous! You can hardly tell they are there.

I have tried other furniture protectors, but these are the absolute best, in my opinion. They are sticky and double-sided, as well as see-through. It’s that sticky-ness that prevents your cat from wanting to scratch that spot.

I purchased the Kohree Brand Furniture Protector, XL 12 X 17 inch. You simply cut them down to the shape  you need and attach to the furniture.

The perfect choice for those of us who don’t want to compromise on style!

You have a beautiful home, Jelica. Now if only I can convince my husband to get a cat!!! His major worry is the furniture damage. We had a cat who sadly passed away and she destroyed our couches…Thanks for this post!!
