I love using essential oils in our home. Whether in an air freshener, as a cleaner or as a general antibacterial agent, essential oils are an integral part of our home keeping routine. So when we recently ran low on one of our bathroom’s soap dispensers, I decided to refill it with essential oils. Besides the obvious health benefits, it was an easy way to spend just a few extra pennies using supplies I already had at home. In today’s post, I’m sharing how to make foaming hand soap using essential oils. It’s an easy way to integrate less toxic options in the home, while also saving on costs – a win-win 🙂
Supplies You’ll Need
~The following contains affiliate links at no extra cost to you. Please see my full disclosure policy here.~
- An Old Foaming Hand Soap Dispenser (or you can purchase an inexpensive one like this one or these ones)
- Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
- Essential Oil(s) – I used lemon & lavender
- Water – I used basic tap water
When transitioning to natural, homemade products, you will be making an investment initially. But the end result is that the ingredients above will last you much longer than having to purchase a new hand soap every time you run out.
In fact, these 3 ingredients – Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap, Essential Oils, and basic tap water – are all the ingredients you’ll need to DIY not only this project, but it’s all you will need for a wide variety of cleaning and freshening products. Just check out the two posts below to get you started:

How To Make Foaming Hand Soap Using Essential Oils
Step 1 – (Optional) Remove Labels
If you’d prefer, peel off any labels still on the soap dispenser.
I still had sticky residue left on mine, so I soaked it in hot, soapy water and scrubbed off the excess.
Step 2 – Fill Dispenser
Fill the dispenser with these 3 ingredients:
- 3/4 water
- 1 squirt of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
- 5 or more drops lemon essential oil + 5 or more drops lavender essential oil
(If you prefer to use something to disperse the essential oils, add a dash of SEA SALT, BAKING SODA, or ALOE GEL – these are natural substances that can be effective. With a foaming hand soap dispenser, however, I don’t find this to be necessary as the essential oils seem to get distributed fairly well with each pump.)
I hope you see just how easy it is to make foaming soap using essential oils and other all-natural ingredients. I personally enjoy finding less toxic options to clean and deodorize my home, but also, it’s a great way to save money, too 🙂

June 25, 2018 at 10:55 amSince moving to the country with a well and septic system, homemade foaming soaps are something I have started using. Just ran out and your recipe has saved me from searching for the one I lost. Plus I didn’t know about adding baking soda, sea salt or aloe gel. Thank you Jelica! I always look forward to your great posts.
PS: if you love scent as much as I do, I use Dr. Brother’s Lavender to enhance the scent even further.

June 26, 2018 at 4:28 pmI would love to move out into the country! Mr Fix and I have often talked about it. For now, we are good where we are, but you never know…As for Dr Bronner’s lavender scent – I’ve used that as a shower gel, if you can believe it. It’s amazing how versatile castile soap can be!
