Alrighty, folks, maybe you’ve been following along on our primary bedroom progress on Instagram (and if not, come join me there), or maybe you haven’t. If not, then let me tell you: it’s been progressing at an absolute SNAIL’S PACE.
Regardless, I thought I’d give you the update on how things are coming along and share the ONE THING that has had the BIGGEST IMPACT so far.
Okay, let’s dive in!

PRIMARY BEDROOM PROGRESS: The Lead-Up
When we first moved into our home over SIXTEEN YEARS AGO, the bedroom was one of the first spaces to receive basic furniture and bedding. It was comfortable, functional, and then…LARGELY IGNORED.

I mean, it was SO IGNORED that I had let things wear down and even gave up on keeping the cats from clawing up the cheap storage piece at the foot of the bed – just keeping it real, folks!

Fast-forward to just THREE YEARS AGO, and I decided it was high time to update our bedroom. At the time, I shared all this in this blog post (+ mood board).
And while things have been chugging along, it’s been slow and steady. After all, a home is never finished. There are always things to update or refresh. But it was not until very recently, that I’d say we were able to speed up to about 80% OF THE WAY to feeling complete – not too shabby.
And it all came down to just ONE UPDATE that got us there. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the bedding. It wasn’t the rug. It wasn’t even the headboard.
It was THE CURTAINS.
This totally surprised me!
Our PREVIOUS CURTAINS were a set of IKEA panels purchased about 15 years ago when we needed something installed, fast! The problem was that they were never really quite right. They were too narrow – always looking like a stretched sheet across the windows – and the grommet style isn’t one I particularly liked anymore.

THE UPDATE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: Linen-Blend Curtains
Once I started researching curtains after partnering with TwoPages – a home decor brand specializing in custom curtains and shades – I quickly realized just how much I didn’t know about how to select the right size curtains for windows. There was a lot to consider:
- Width. Height. Fullness.
- Pleats. Liners. Hardware.
As someone who has more blinds than curtains at home, I was a little intimidated by the process of ordering custom curtains – I didn’t want to make a mistake!
TwoPages made this easy with their built-in Drapery Measuring Guide. This was INCREDIBLY HELPFUL. I simply entered our window measurements and rod height and – POOF! – they provide the exact size needed based on our preferred look.
I decided on CURTAINS that would ‘kiss’ the floor and that had a bit of EXTRA FULLNESS (they even provided guidance on that), and, voila! This is what they look like in OUR BEDROOM NOW:

I chose a linen-blend fabric that has a lovely texture and weight to it, giving our bedroom a much-needed warmth.
There are a lot of fabric, colour, and style options to choose from – definitely spoiled for choice – and I ultimately chose the Liz Linen Pinch Pleat Curtains in the colour ‘Chocolate Tart.’ It was the PERECT SHADE of neutral brown, with just the right hint of warmth without being overly ‘orangey’ which is what I was looking for in this space.

But, this is where ordering swatches beforehand was helpful (‘Chocolate Tart’ looked more like a dark grey on my computer screen). Trust me, order the swatches – well worth it.
I also selected ROOM-DARKENING LINING which blocks 75% of the light (you can choose curtains without lining, light lining, all the way to complete black-out lining). I prefer waking up to a bit of natural light coming through, so room-darkening struck the right balance.

Oh, and one more feature that was really kind of cool: MEMORY SHAPING.
When you select this feature, your curtains hang beautifully right out of the package and MAINTAIN THEIR SHAPE without any effort.

Even when the panels arrived in the mail, it was simply a matter of pulling them out and hanging them. There was hardly a wrinkle in sight. Just a few small areas to steam iron along the edges which came out easily.
Most importantly to me, THESE CURTAINS completely transformed our room.
They add softness.
Warmth.
Privacy.
Visual height.

And somehow, they make every other element of the room feel incredibly finished (even if we’re not quite there yet!).
One thing I wasn’t fully prepared for was the WEIGHT of the lined panels. They’re substantial. We currently have them hanging on an extendable IKEA curtain rod meant for lighter weight curtains, so we’ll eventually need to upgrade to something sturdier.

Overall, I am really happy with the quality of the fabric and beautiful construction which gives our bedroom the gravitas it was missing before.

These curtains really have transformed the entire look and feel of the space. As our primary bedroom progress proceeds, the curtains were that ONE thing that not only changed the room, but inspired other styling updates, too.

OTHER BEDROOM UPDATES…SO FAR
Once the curtains were up, I suddenly felt inspired to tidy, dust, and restyle the room a little more intentionally.
Funny how that happens.
So as I continue to clean and update our bedroom, I thought I’d share what the rest of our room looks like right now.
Headboard & Bedding
The first upgrade I made in this room – even before the curtains – was the addition of THIS HEADBOARD in this green velvet. It’s one of my favourite updates – though installing it required far more measuring than I expected. Still worth it 🙂

For the warmer months, I’ve packed away our duvet and cover and switched over to THIS CHARCOAL COVERLET instead. It’s lightweight, has a subtle stitched checkered pattern that adds some texture, and drapes beautifully.

Finding a charcoal coverlet was surprisingly difficult! So I was thrilled when I finally found one I liked – a lovely balance of modernity with a touch of traditional.
Bench & Rug
At the end of the bed is a SLATTED WOODEN BENCH (similar ones here and here) that originally lived in our foyer before we upgraded that space a couple of years ago. The bench is the perfect height and width for our bed and feels right at home here.

Below the bench is this LOLOI RUG (similar one here) I’ve had for a few years now. It has a faded Persian-inspired design in shades of olive, brown, and black that works beautifully with the moodier palette I’ve been slowly creating here.

Lighting & Styling (still in progress)
On either side of the bed, I replaced our table lamps with these BLACK MID-CENTURY MODERN SCONCES (similar ones here, here and here). They are swing-arm sconces – which I love – and they free up space on the bedside tables while adding a beautiful modern aesthetic.

On either side of the bed are these substantial chest of drawers which we’ve had since the beginning. Nothing new there. But I’ve been experimenting with accessories. Leaning artwork, rather than hanging – for example – while I decide what I actually want to keep.

This FAUX OLIVE TREE in the corner also adds some “life” and colour to this side of the room, however subtle that might be.

On the direct opposite side of the bedroom is a SEATING NOOK. It remains a mostly unused – yet surprisingly comfortable – place to relax, when I remember to sit there!. I haven’t yet landed on the right accessories, like art, pillow, etc, but I’ve had fun experimenting there as well (including providing a temporary hanging spot for a favourite scarf).

In fact, I am still working on accessorizing. I’m considering adding more touches of green – like a lumbar pillow or replacing the lounge chair with my green one – to tie everything together.
But for now, I’m taking my time.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While there are still a few things left on my to-do list, this room finally feels like it’s coming together. And if there’s one thing this primary bedroom progress has taught me, it’s that sometimes the biggest transformations come from the updates you least expect.
In this case, THE CURTAINS made such a difference. They completely changed the look and feel of the room and helped bring all the other pieces together.
And don’t forget… If you’re browsing TwoPages and find something you love, you can use the code, APRETTYFIX to save 20% off your purchase – sitewide. Whether it’s the curtains featured here or something entirely different, every little bit helps when decorating a home! 😊
