I must admit, my tastes change often. Or to put it in a more sophisticated way, I’m evolving 😉 So when I end up with a lot of home decor items that no longer work in my space, I’ve discovered that I can simply spray paint them to match my current tastes. It is a great – and inexpensive – way to incorporate what I already have into my new design. So today, I thought I’d share with you how I refresh and update home decor using spray paint.
Here are just a few of my favourites:
Pinecones
Of all the decor materials I use, pinecones are among my favourites. I love that each is uniquely shaped and has an almost ‘architectural’ quality. I love displaying them au naturale, but I also love to use spray paint to match the bright decor palette in our space.
This particular decor project formed part of a much larger DIY Cubby Wall Display.
Grouping several spray painted pinecones together is also another great way to refresh your decor. I especially love adding pinecones to containers, like this geometric bowl. The juxtaposition of geometric shapes against the rugged, natural look of the pinecones creates visual interest in our home.

(BTW: Spray painting pinecones is so simple! Simply lay them out on old newspapers and lightly spray on one side, allowing them to dry 20 minutes. Then turn them over and repeat.)
Thrift Store Bowl
I often find thrift store items that have the perfect shape and feel, but the colour just isn’t right. With spray paint, that can be easily remedied in short order.
For example, I was able to transform the bowl above into a stunning display in no time at all.

Christmas Wreath
I don’t often create a lot of Christmas crafts. There’s already too much time and money being spent over the holidays, so I prefer to reuse or refresh some of my existing decor.
Recently, I began gravitating towards a ‘whiter’ Christmas palette and had to figure out a way to incorporate all my old, faux greenery into my current aesthetic. So, I began to add a ‘snowy’ effect by lightly spray painting my greenery. I even picked up an inexpensive can of Snow Spray to cover the wreath pictured below. I just loved how it turned out!

Plastic Boot Tray
For this DIY, I used spray paint as well as acrylic paint to refresh a cheap, plastic boot tray.

Blossom Branch
For this project, I simply picked up a couple of mismatching branches from the craft store, sprayed the darker of the two, and bound them together with craft wire to create an outdoor wall hanging. It was so easy to do and added an unexpected, natural element in our small sitting area.

Glass Decor
A few years ago, I purchased various inexpensive glass decor pieces from the craft store, spray-painted them white and placed them in the cubby wall display I’ve already mentioned in this post.
When set against the pops of colour I added in the back of each cubby, the decor pieces stand out even more.

Serving Tray
Last, but certainly not least, I have been known to spray paint in order to refresh the current look of an older piece, including this serving tray.
While not specifically designed to sit outdoors, this geometric tray ended up sitting outside all summer one year and, as a result, yellowed in the sun. I wish I had taken a before and after, but trust me, it had yellowed to the point of making me wrinkle my nose at the thought of putting it out again. But with a few quick sprays of white spray paint, it was as good as new and fits in seamlessly with our outdoor decor.
So the next time you’re thinking that something isn’t working in your space anymore, consider spray painting it! You’ll be surprised at how much this one small and inexpensive step will help refresh and update your home.
Happy (spray)painting 🙂

June 7, 2018 at 7:02 amThanks Leanna! The blossom branch project was a real experiment for me in that I wanted a different take on traditional wreath decor. The result was what you see above – it really fit the space and took me no time to make 🙂
