Now, don’t misunderstand me here. I am a big fan of the mighty Christmas tree! It is the piece de resistance of holiday decorating. But, if you’re someone with a tiny space or little means or, like me, don’t have children or hosting duties this year (hubby and I are traveling during Christmas), then you may not have the means (or inclination) to put up a tree. In fact, this is our second year going tree-less and our home still manages to ooze all the coziness and warmth of the Christmas season. So, today I wanted to open up our home to you and share 5 treeless Christmas decorating ideas that’ll up your holiday style 🙂
Today’s post is also part of Holiday Spaces Tour & Blog Hop hosted by the uber-talented Katrin over at Northern Feeling. So when you’re done here, then simply click on one of the gallery links at the bottom of this post to get still more inspiration from Katrin and some of my other blogging pals who are also opening up their homes in this holiday tour extravaganza 🙂
5 Treeless Christmas Decorating Ideas (To Up Your Holiday Style!)
#1: Birch Logs & Branches (or Bringing the Outdoors In)
Upon entering our home, I added a few small rustic touches that add a lot of warmth and coziness. Adding some birch logs or branches are a great way to add that feeling that an actual (or faux) Christmas tree evokes.
In keeping with the rustic theme from the foyer, I’ve also injected outdoor elements and animal motifs throughout.
#2: Sprinkles of Greenery
Adding in a balance of small and large-scale touches of greenery throughout is also a great way to evoke the feeling of having a Christmas tree in your home in a treeless decorating scheme.
#3: Mini Christmas Trees
Of all the treeless Christmas decorating ideas in this post, using mini Christmas trees is by far my favourite! By adding 1, 2, 3 or more of these little guys, you get to have your cake and eat it too! (I think I may be mixing my metaphors, but you get the idea 😉 ). With one or more mini Christmas trees, you can decorate each tree with your favourite ornaments – store bought or handmade – and really feel the spirit of Christmas in your home.
My second mini Christmas tree is on the opposite wall where our dining area is located.

#4: Over-sized Vase or Bowl Filled With Greenery
In the absence of a Christmas tree, having at least 1-2 large vases of greenery is a great way to have the large-scale impact that a tree normally has.
High impact vignettes with loads of greenery in an over-sized vase or even a large bowl, like the one in this dining area, can really help generate that sense of Christmas in the home. In this bowl, I’ve mixed in faux eucalyptus and pine greenery for maximum impact.
#5: Ornaments as Decor
Finally, one of my all-time favourite ways to inject a home with holiday style without a large-scale Christmas tree is with ornaments. While ornaments are normally used to decorate the tree, I often like using them to decorate in other ways, too.
The first and obvious place to start is to display your ornaments on a mini Christmas tree, as I’ve done here…
…and here on the other side of the room.
But you can also add a single ornament in a simple vignette.
If you’d like to add high impact with your ornaments, why not try displaying several ornaments at once just as I did here in this cubby wall display. I simply swapped out my usual accessories with ornaments and, voila! I had a bold and bright Christmas wall display.

December 4, 2018 at 7:43 pmThanks so much, Ana! Faux fur is just one of my favourite go-to pieces. I think it’s because no matter what season it is, the texture always makes me feel warm and cozy inside 🙂
