12 SUMMER CRAFT IDEAS TO TRY THIS SEASON

1.  Weaving

Weaving tips for the modern weaver.

I started weaving on a whim 8 years ago and have fallen in love with this ancient craft. It’s been a mindful, slow-paced, therapeutic and creative outlet like no other.

If you are new to the idea, handheld looms are the perfect starting point, making this practice mobile with no fancy equipment required. If you’d like to try weaving – or want to add that on your family’s activities list – then you will learn all you need below:

Beginner Tutorial: An Introduction To Weaving (2-part tutorial for beginners)

Starter Kit: Complete Weaving Starter Kits (Award-Winning Kits, now available in my Etsy Shop)

Or, if you’d like to jump into it with a simple cardboard loom – a no-cost way to see if you like weaving, take a look at the tutorials below:

2.  Nature Crafts: Pinecones

I love pinecones! I love styling with them and crafting with them. They have this beautiful, natural sculptural quality and they’re small enough to create something beautiful with.

While the internet is chalk full of any number of pinecone crafts, I’ve shared a few on the blog including this Pretty Pinecone Wreath DIY, this light and bright Pinecone Bowl Display (using spray paint), and – one of my favourites for the kiddos – Yarn-Wrapped Pinecones!

These modern, yarn-wrapped pinecones are a great way to inject some colour into your fall decor this year. A fun and easy project to share with the kids.

Pinecones are readily available in parks (or possibly on your property) and you can always find them at your local craft store.

3.  Nature Crafts: Twig Triangle Wreaths

These twig wreaths are a great option for you or the kids as they are simple to create and add a lovely natural touch at home.

To make your own, take the kids outside for a ‘stick hunt.’ You can find any number of slim branches or sticks in a heavily wooded park or even at home, if you’ve got enough trees on your property!

Once you’ve gathered your twigs and the rest of your materials, go to the tutorial here and start making your own triangle twig wreaths!

4.  Nature Crafts: Rustic Mixed Moss Wreath

Speaking of nature crafts, last year I shared How To Make A Rustic Mixed Moss Wreath. It’s not your typical wreath and that’s why I had so much fun creating it.

DIY rustic mixed moss wreath made out of branches and twigs.

It’s a great DIY to try if you’ve got lots of natural materials around that you’d like to use, including sticks and moss.

It’s a slow-build wreath that requires adding layers to create, but when it’s done, it’s incredibly satisfying! I loved adding it to my front door 🙂

5.  Painting:  Framed & Unframed Art

Painting pictures, whether framed or unframed, is simply the easiest way to unleash your creativity and share the experience with the kids.

You may even have a decor project that you’d like to try like this DIY Brushstroke Statement Art which I shared here on the blog while I was updating my guest bathroom. It was an easy and inexpensive way to add a modern touch.

Add a touch of modern style with simple abstract brushstroke art you can make at home.

Or you may want to try this DIY Whitewash Abstract Art on a canvas frame.

No precision is required for this on! Just wait as the layers of paint dry (or simply get your hair dryer out to speed up the process).

6.  Rope Coasters (Outdoor/Indoor Use)

As we spend more time outdoors, it’s nice to have options for enjoying those outdoor living spaces, big or small. These DIY Rope Coasters were made for just such a purpose. Versatile and perfect for outdoor or indoor use, they are easy to make and you can find most materials at the local dollar store!

7.  Jewelry Crafts: Easy Necklace & Bracelet DIYs

There is definitely something about warmer weather which elicits a desire to wear the not-so-typical jewelry choices. It’s a time to get more creative and colourful with our outfits and accessories.

Handmade jewelry is always a great way to do just that. This DIY Painted Wood Bead Necklace (using nailpolish!) adds a chic, casual vibe to any outfit. I loved making this one!

8.  Mini Marbled Painted Pots

Plants! Whether indoor or outdoor, there’s nothing like adding life at home with plants. Of course, our own indoor plants are all synthetic for the sake of our cats, but it does not mean I can’t have a taste of the outdoors inside!

These DIY Mini Marbled Painted Pots are so much fun to create. All it requires is some acrylic paint, nail polish, and a bucket of water – do this outdoors if you’ve got the kids involved – and you’ll really have fun being able to create unique mini pots to enjoy at home.

9.  Easy Macrame Ideas (Using Just 1 Knot)

If you’ve been wanting to dabble with macrame but feel a bit overwhelmed by all those knots then stick to learning just one knot instead!

10.  Easy Yarn Wall Hanging

Creating a yarn wall hanging to add a bit of personality to a child’s room, a bedroom, a craft room, an office or any little corner of your home could not be simpler!

11.  Embroidery

As far as low-budget crafts are concerned, embroidery is such a great choice – you can get all your supplies at your local dollar store, a local craft store (like Michaels), and on Amazon. It’s also a mobile craft that can be done at a table, on a chair, on the floor and great for traveling!

These 7 basic embroidery stitches are great for beginners to start creating their own designs at home.
